Before you purchase, your first artwork, here is a fun exercise!.
Next time you visit an art gallery or museum, snap photos of the pieces that truly mesmerize you. When you return home, grab a pen and paper, and start jotting down your thoughts on what struck you the most. Here’s a helpful guide to get you started:
-
What caught your attention in the artwork you photographed with your phone? Examine aspects such as color, medium, style, theme of the artwork, and learn about the artist.
-
Review your budget (Collecting art doesn’t require spending thousands of dollars, but it’s necessary to establish a budget).
-
Evaluate do you have space for the art work
-
Will you need to transport this work?
-
Is framing needed for this work?
Yesterday, I shared a big announcement on Instagram which you can find out here :).
I highly recommend The Black Market: A guide to art collecting by Charle Moore. This book helped me understand the art market, Black artists, and deeper dive into what I wanted to collect. I started officially collecting art this year but read this book a few years ago. A great guide to read as you start your collecting journey.
