Tomorrow’s Tech, Today: Innovation That Moves Us Forward

    Key takeaways
    • Apple will not support Intel-based Macs in macOS 27.
    • Apple confirmed macOS 26 Tahoe is the final update supporting Intel Macs.
    • Unsupported models include the 13-inch MacBook Pro (2020), 16-inch MacBook Pro (2019), Mac Pro (2019), 27-inch iMac (2020).
    • Owners will receive security updates for the next three years.
    • Apple silicon Macs with an M1 or newer are expected to support macOS 27; exact list remains to be seen.

Apple is expected to announce the macOS 27 software update for the Mac at WWDC on June 8, and there are a ton of Macs that will not be able to run it.

While the macOS 27 software is unlikely to be released to the public until the fall, we already know that there won’t be support for Intel-based Macs. Apple confirmed as much during the WWDC 2025 event last year when it said macOS 26 Tahoe would be the final update to support Macs with Intel’s chips.

That means that there are some Intel Macs that are running macOS 26 today but won’t be able to install macOS 27 when it’s made available to the public. Those Macs include:

    • 13-inch MacBook Pro (2020, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
    • 16-inch MacBook Pro (2019)
    • Mac Pro (2019)
    • 27-inch iMac (2020)

Owners of those Macs can at least expect them to receive security updates for the next three years.

As for which Apple silicon Macs will support macOS 27, that remains to be seen. However, we expect that all Macs with an M1 or newer will be good to go when the update is announced on June 8. We also expect that to be the case for next year’s macOS update, with the M1 chip similarly performant to the MacBook Neo’s A18 Pro.
