Game On: Sports News, Highlights & Commentary

    Key takeaways
    • Two-stroke penalty for breaching rules; R&A called it "accidental" yet Bryson DeChambeau's petulant response drew criticism.
    • Bryson DeChambeau dominated headlines, overshadowing Ryan Fox's maiden major at the Open.
    • Rory McIlroy criticized Bryson DeChambeau's posturing; R&A approved. His antics generate eyeballs and debate.
    • Future uncertain: prefers LIV, may return to PGA Tour; circuits will weigh drama against making life difficult for him.

The potential for stigma was laid bare close to the conclusion of Saturday at the Open Championship. “Bryson, ya cheat,” bellowed a lone voice from the stand adjacent to Royal Birkdale’s 18th green. This is an environment in which being unfaithful to one’s spouse would be seen as preferable to breaching the sacred rules of a sacred game.

By Sunday, the world No 1, Scottie Scheffler, was riding to the defence of Bryson DeChambeau. “I’ve known him for a long time and he’s a lot of things, but he’s definitely not a cheater,” said Scheffler. Except in this case, nuance is required. No one in authority has actually accused DeChambeau of cheating for the incident which incurred a two-stroke penalty. The R&A’s executive director of governance stipulated DeChambeau’s action when breaching the rules during round two was “accidental”.

It was an odd thing for Grant Moir to say, which smacked not only as if trying to placate an irate DeChambeau but working a little too hard to protect the reputation of the Open. It does not matter whether DeChambeau’s action in stamping down long grass behind his ball was deliberate or not.

Intention is irrelevant, just as it was when Shane Lowry incurred a two-stroke penalty in the Open of 2025. Then, as on Friday, a rule was breached. The R&A’s misstep here was nonetheless a trivial one. DeChambeau was in the wrong, far more in respect of his petulant response to the situation than the fact it arose in the first place.

If sport were pure, this Open would be known for Ryan Fox’s nerveless finish. The popular New Zealander earned his maiden major win in emphatic fashion. The pace and simplicity with which Fox plies his trade offers lessons for us all.

It was, instead, a tournament dominated by matters involving DeChambeau. By Monday morning, the R&A was fielding requests over whether DeChambeau threatened to bring Donald Trump into heated discussions over his sanction on Friday evening. While this scenario was easy to believe, such action would also be futile; given the R&A has left Trump’s Turnberry resort in the Open wilderness for years, it is hardly ever going to let the US president influence a leaderboard. Trump has always been deferential towards the R&A. DeChambeau’s protests felt telling. This is a player subject to very little external scrutiny on the LIV tour. He never appeared to have any intention of fielding media questions on the Open affair.

Golf has endured or enjoyed, depending on one’s outlook, a heated news cycle for years. It has been a notable and intriguing shift. Those who insist the sport at core level is boring are ignorant to the fact it is no more or less tedious than cricket, Formula One or cycling.

LIV’s arrival and subsequent fallout had just about settled down by the time Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund determined golf was an expense it could do without. Cue the latest, ongoing theme; LIV’s probable demise and how a fractured sport pieces itself together again. Birdies and bogeys, brilliance such as that delivered by Fox, are all still covered but the noise outside the ropes matters more than ever before.

In this sense, DeChambeau and associated chaos was an Open gift. Rory McIlroy, once a defender of DeChambeau, said what a lot of players were understood to be thinking by berating the American for the posturing and pantomime of Friday. The R&A’s hierarchy, who were furious at DeChambeau, surely approved. McIlroy’s remarks lit up the internet far more than Sam Burns’s run to the top of the leaderboard.

The question is whether golf needs the hassle. We may be about to find out. DeChambeau’s clear preference is to remain on the LIV circuit, even in modified form, if fresh funding can be sourced for 2027. If that does not come to pass, or if DeChambeau reckons a lack of competition there is harming his chances on bigger stages, he will have to beat a path back towards the PGA Tour. That circuit will have no intention of making life easy for DeChambeau but what price the eyeballs, the drama, the noise that some insist this sport needs? DeChambeau up against McIlroy on a regular basis would be box office.

If DeChambeau has his way, no one will look too closely at a major record for 2026 which involves three missed cuts and a tie for 14th. His Open Sunday was dismal, from an earlier position of great promise. Nonetheless, an expectant golf public awaits DeChambeau’s bulletin on all things Birkdale; most likely coming to a media outlet influenced by the man himself very soon. In DeChambeau, LIV has an attention-grabbing asset.

DeChambeau is treading a fine line between force for good and comedic distraction. The sport’s relationship with this player is a complex one. Birkdale did Bryson no favours.
