Chatham County Police Department Becomes First Agency in County to Utilize Flock Transparency Portal

    Key takeaways
    • Flock Transparency Portal displays number of license plate readers, agencies sharing data, 30-day plate reads, policies, and what devices do not detect.
    • Thirty days of searches include investigation type and number of Flock networks; portal prevents access to individual license plate numbers.
    • Flock data aided the Quinton Simon investigation and enabled recovery of a stolen vehicle with arrest within thirty minutes of the theft.
    • Access data at the Flock Safety - Chatham County GA PD Transparency Portal or via the Chatham County Police Department website under Community Resources.

New Feature Allows Anyone to See Important Information Regarding License Plate Readers and Their Use

The Chatham County Police Department is the first law enforcement agency in Chatham County to utilize the new Flock Transparency Portal, a tool designed to give everyone important insights into how the license plate readers are used for public safety and criminal investigations.

“Transparency has always been a cornerstone of the Chatham County Police Department,” said Chatham County Police Chief Jeff Hadley. “When we learned that Flock was giving us the ability to share information about how we are using their devices, we did not hesitate. We are proud to be at the forefront of this initiative, and we think people will find this information very valuable.”

The portal allows visitors to access information that includes the number of license plate readers in a jurisdiction, which agencies share their data with the Chatham County Police Department, how many individual license plates have been read in the last 30 days, policies, and information about what is and is not detected through the license plate readers.

Those wanting to do a deep dive into the data can access thirty days of searches that include the type of investigation/crime involved in each search and the number of Flock networks used in each search. The portal does not allow any access to individual license plate numbers or any information surrounding them.

Users can also read about specific crimes and cases where the Flock license plate readers played a key role in solving the case.

“Flock gave us a crucial, early clue in our investigation into the disappearance of Quinton Simon – a case that turned into the largest law enforcement operation in our county’s history,” Hadley said. “And, as recently as Friday, we were able to recover a stolen vehicle and arrest the suspect within 30 minutes of the theft occurring. Flock has proven its value to us repeatedly, and we want everyone to feel confident in how this technology is being used by our department.”

The Chatham County Police Department’s data on the Flock Transparency Portal can be accessed by visiting:

Flock Safety – Chatham County GA PD Transparency Portal

It can also be accessed via the Chatham County Police Department website (Chatham County Police Department – Home) under the Community Resources tab.
