Switzerland Tops A New Ranking Of The Best Countries For Americans To Move Abroad

For Americans who want to be expats, a new report claims that the best relocation options aren’t necessarily the most popular.

Earlier this year, the cultural intelligence and inclusion training platform Country Navigator shared a report on the top places attracting American workers. The April 2026 report claimed that there are “nearly 900,000 annual searches from the U.S. for moving abroad.” In its research, the platform analyzed member countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and other developed economies to determine where U.S. workers are most likely to relocate based on migration trends, demand, economic conditions, and cultural alignment.

Switzerland ranked highest for the combination of favorable factors for an American’s suitable relocation. In addition to the Nordic country having a notable population of American migrants (475.4 per 100,000 people), the report highlighted that Switzerland also has stable politics and working conditions, including low unemployment. Additionally, Country Navigator claimed that Switzerland has a “relatively low cultural distance from the U.S.,” meaning American workers who move there may find its pace easy to adapt to.

The report’s list of Top 5 countries attracting American workers was rounded out consecutively by New Zealand, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Canada. Other countries included on the list were Norway, Denmark, Australia, Singapore, and the United Kingdom.

Notably, Americans’ most-searched relocation destinations resulted in a different ranking. Per the report, the top five, in order, were Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Spain. Noting the intense interest in the northern neighbor, the source detailed that “Canada attracts more than 105,000 annual searches from the U.S. – nearly double the next highest destination.”

What Americans Should Consider Before Moving Abroad

Overall, the report emphasized that the key to moving abroad successfully is considering more than an approved visa or work opportunity. To give themselves the best chance of a seamless transition, expats should consider all their international options. Factors such as the level of cultural distance, language barriers, and the number of American migrants present in the destinations one is considering can all make a difference.
