    TELL CITY – North Posey ran up the score again on September 11. Now, the Vikings find themselves 4-0 and hold firm control atop the PAC Small School Division.

    North Posey defeated Tell City 52-29 at Legion Field; giving the Marksmen their first loss of the season. It was a key matchup in the division — No. 1 vs No. 2 for sole control of top spot.

    After defeating the main competitors in the way of its title defense, and a tough Southridge team in Week 1, North Posey coach Waylon Schenk is proud of what his group has shown through four weeks.

    “If you told me we’d be 4-0 after the schedule, I’d be extremely happy because I knew our first four was going to be a gauntlet,” Schenk said.

    Unlike Week 2 and 3, the Vikings found themselves in more of a fight in Tell City.

    The Marksmen took the lead late in the first quarter after quarterback Lucas Beier and running back Brandon Casebolt willed them down the field. But it was junior running back Bishop Wilson who found the end zone on the sweep to make it 7-3.

    Unfortunately for Tell City, North Posey’s response was immediate. A big play connection between quarterback Carter Schickel and wide receiver Brody Fehn, then a big run from running back Cade Mauck up the middle set up his eventual score to make it 10-7.

    Where the momentum switched was at the beginning of the second quarter. The Marksmen started it off with a big Casebolt run to get them near the red zone. Immediately after, Beier threw an interception to Fehn. The Vikings would capitalize on the turnover with another Mauck touchdown.

    Turnovers like this, and untimely penalties, hurt Tell City’s progress in Week 4.

    “Sometimes it’s just the way that the game goes,” Marksmen coach Malin Webb said. “I was proud of our kids for fighting for 48 minutes. It would have been very Tell City-ish to just throw in the towel. Our guys didn’t do that.”

    Webb is right. Tell City’s rushing attack gave North Posey the occasional issue. Beier and Casebolt ran hard all night — embracing the contact from a swarming Vikings defense.

    Cade Mauck’s return from injury

    But it was North Posey’s offense that, again, stole the show. Schickel connected with wide receiver Remi Johnson for three touchdowns on September 11. Mauck finished the game with three touchdowns; his third came late on his longest run of the night.

    After missing his junior season to injury, Mauck gained some perspective. He still has another opportunity to represent the Vikings community.

    And with seven touchdowns through four games of his final season, the senior is taking full advantage.

    “Play every snap like it’s the last one,” Mauck said. “Just staying patient, trusting the coaches and the big boys up front. Couldn’t do it without them.”

    A similar tone to Schickel after the Tecumseh win — this is a truly selfless group. And with the amount of returners they have, one that is solidified in its identity.

    In Schenk’s message after the road win, he expressed how proud he was. But also how this upcoming week will test them. In Week 5, the Vikings host a winless Pike Central team that has allowed 51 points per game.

    Expect the 10th-year coach to have his group ready.

    “Pike Central’s struggling, we know that,” Schenk said. “Great teams get better in these types of situations. We kind of have to compete against ourselves this week. We’re a good team right now, but we want to be a great team.”

    Tell City heads to Kentucky in Week 5 for a matchup with Hancock County. After what his offense did tonight against what he believes will be his group’s toughest opponent in North Posey, Webb said there are positives to take into the next game.
