Style Spotlight: Looks, Trends & Fashion Inspiration

    Key takeaways
    • Switch to richer fall colors like chocolate brown, olive green, burgundy, camel, and cream to make summer pieces feel seasonal.
    • Swap sandals for transitional shoes like ballet flats, loafers, sneaker mules, or sneakers to instantly make outfits feel early fall.
    • Add lightweight layers, richer textures, or seasonal accessories to transform dresses, shorts, and tops without overheating.

I don’t know about you, but this time of year always puts me in the mood for fall fashion… even when the weather outside is saying otherwise! I LOVE fall clothes, but when it’s still 80 or 90 degrees outside, the last thing I want to do is throw on a chunky sweater and boots just because September is around the corner!

Over the years, I’ve learned that transitioning your wardrobe from summer to fall doesn’t mean you have to completely change what you’re wearing. It’s really about taking the summer pieces you already love and making a few small styling changes like adding richer colors and textures, swapping your sandals for a more transitional shoe, incorporating lightweight layers, or simply changing up your accessories. If you’re curious about what’s trending this year, I also rounded up the fall fashion trends I’m most excited about for 2026 here.

Below, I’m walking you through some of my easiest tips for transitioning your summer wardrobe into fall, especially when the weather is still warm. Then, at the bottom of the post, I’m sharing plenty of summer-to-fall transitional outfit ideas and inspiration so you can see exactly how I’m putting these tips into practice!

My biggest advice is not to overthink it. A few simple swaps can make the pieces you already own feel completely different (and much more like fall!).

One of the easiest ways to transition your wardrobe from summer to fall is by simply changing up your color palette! You definitely don’t have to pull out the sweaters and boots yet. Start by incorporating richer fall colors like chocolate brown, olive green, burgundy, camel and cream into the pieces you’re already wearing. A chocolate brown tank with denim shorts or an olive green dress still works when it’s 85 degrees outside, but immediately makes your outfit feel more like fall.

I’m especially loving chocolate brown and olive green this year, and both are SO easy to mix with denim, cream and other neutrals you probably already have in your closet.

Shoes can completely change the feel of an outfit, and this might be the easiest summer-to-fall swap of all! Instead of reaching for your usual summer sandals, try a ballet flat, mary jane, loafer, sneaker mule or even a great pair of sneakers. You can wear the exact same tank, tee, dress or shorts you wore all summer, but changing the shoes instantly makes the outfit feel more appropriate for early fall.

I’m especially loving sneaker mules this year because they’re the PERFECT transitional shoe. You get the look of a sneaker without having to wear a heavy boot when it’s still hot outside.

Of course, layering is one of my favorite ways to transition summer outfits into fall, but the key is keeping those layers LIGHT! A button-down, lightweight cardigan, denim jacket, barn jacket or trench can easily be thrown over a tank or dress and taken off when the day warms up.

I also love draping a sweater over my shoulders when it’s still too hot to actually wear it. It adds that little hint of fall to an outfit without making you sweat! As the temperatures start to drop, you can wear those same layers over tees and lightweight sweaters, which makes them some of the hardest-working pieces in a transitional wardrobe.

One of my favorite tricks is mixing lightweight summer clothes with richer fall textures like suede, denim, leather and lightweight knits.

Try adding a suede handbag to a tank and jeans, pairing denim shorts with a lightweight knit, or wearing a summer dress with suede flats. Even one small change in texture can take an outfit from feeling very “summer” to much more transitional without making you any warmer!

If it’s WAY too hot to even think about adding another layer, change up your accessories instead! A chocolate brown handbag, fun belt, scarf, statement jewelry or oversized sunglasses can make even the simplest summer outfit feel more seasonal.

This is also one of my favorite ways to incorporate new fall trends without buying an entirely new wardrobe. You can keep wearing the basics you already own and add one or two fun accessories to make them feel completely different.

Don’t pack away your summer dresses just yet! Dresses are actually some of my favorite pieces to transition from summer to fall because you can style the same dress completely differently as the weather changes.

Wear it now with sandals and a straw bag, then swap in ballet flats or sneakers and a leather or suede handbag for an early fall outfit. Once it actually gets cooler, add a cardigan or lightweight jacket and a pair of boots. I LOVE finding pieces that I can wear across multiple seasons, and a good dress is one of the easiest ways to do it.

If you live somewhere that stays warm well into September (or even October!), you definitely don’t need to stop wearing shorts just because fall is technically here. Instead, start pairing them with pieces that feel a little more seasonal.

I love denim shorts with a lightweight sweater or button-down, or a tailored pair of shorts with ballet flats, a belt and a fall handbag. The goal isn’t to dress for 60-degree weather when it’s actually 85 degrees outside! It’s about borrowing little elements from fall fashion while still dressing for the weather you actually have.

Now that we’ve covered some of my favorite ways to transition your wardrobe from summer to fall, let’s get to the fun part…the outfits! Below I’m sharing some summer-to-fall transitional outfit ideas you can recreate with pieces you probably already have in your closet.

As you look through them, pay attention to the little details that make each outfit feel more like fall, whether it’s a richer color, a transitional shoe, a lightweight layer or simply swapping out the accessories. You really don’t need to change your entire wardrobe to start dressing for a new season!

I hope these tips and outfit ideas give you a little inspiration as you start transitioning your own wardrobe from summer to fall! Remember, you don’t have to pack away all of your summer clothes or buy an entirely new wardrobe! The smallest changes can make such a big difference. Swap your sandals for a pair of flats, add a lightweight layer, bring in a richer fall color or simply change up your accessories!

I’ll be sharing LOTS more fall outfit inspiration as we get further into the season, so stay tuned and bookmark this page because I’ll be adding more outfit inspo over the next few weeks!
