Black Athletes in the Spotlight: HBCU Sports & Local Highlights

    Key takeaways
    • Parents must genuinely support other kids; jealousy poisons youth sports and entertainment environments.
    • Protect children's online presence; social media pages shape branding and can affect family livelihoods.
    • Young athletes can go viral through bold moves, like inviting celebrities such as Shaquille O'Neal to games.
    • Flau'Jae Johnson pursues music with Roc Nation, meets Lainey Wilson, and records with Lil Wayne.

Seattle Storm star Flau’Jae Johnson’s younger half-brother, Aydin Ameen Brooks, has been the subject of hate recently, which led to his Instagram account being suspended. However, Flau’Jae’s mom, Kia, is not letting it go that easily.

On Monday, Kia uploaded a screenshot of Aydin’s suspended account and posted a lengthy rant against those who have been resentful of the six-year-old aspiring football player with a huge following on IG.

“PSA: Hating on other people’s kids will never help your kid win. @allaboutab_aydin 57K Instagram account got mass reported last night and was suspended by this morning,” Kia wrote. “That’s how ugly it gets out here in youth sports and entertainment. Let this be a lesson to everyone, those who are clapping for your child, some are not genuinely happy for them.”

She also shared that, thanks to her connections, they were able to get Aydin’s IG page reinstated “within 15 minutes.”

For Kia, Aydin’s social media presence is everything, considering this day and age where a lot of people are glued to their phones. “You can’t grasp how much people make off their brands and how much it used to cost to market a product, athlete, or business,” Kia said. “These pages matter and often affect folks’ livelihood, especially when they don’t have more than one thing going on at the time.”

Flau’Jae may have been a star on her own, but her half-brother, Aydin, has found a different way to stardom by doing things that could make him go viral. Last month, he went on a “mission” to invite NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal to watch one of his football games.

Aydin was successful as he got the former LSU standout to give him his number.

While Aydin Ameen Brooks is a young football sensation on Instagram, Flau’Jae Johnson has found her calling off the court after venturing into the world of music.

Last Saturday, the Seattle Storm guard got the chance to meet Grammy Award-winning country singer Lainey Wilson.

In a viral clip shared by CHAMPSIDE on X, Johnson was introduced by her former LSU coach Kim Mulkey to Wilson before an LSU-Clemson college football match.

The LSU alumna had a couple of things to celebrate that night after LSU won 51-10, and even getting the chance to meet someone who would help her get the break she’s chasing away from the court.

When she’s not playing for the Storm, Johnson spends her time as a rapper signed to Roc Nation. She’s also made appearances on “The Rap Game” and “America’s Got Talent,” while also pumping out three albums from 2023 to 2025.

She may be well-known in the WNBA, but Johnson has made a name for herself on the airwaves after collaborating with hip-hop icon Lil Wayne on their song, “Came Out a Beast.”

With the Seattle Storm already eliminated from playoff contention, Johnson now has plenty of time to pump out more music in the hopes of having a fallback career if things in the WNBA don’t go according to plan.
