We’ve heard various reports of impassable side roads across Atlanta and cars being abandoned along North Druid Hills and North Decatur Road in DeKalb County. The AJC reports that a car slid on the ice and crashed through a wall of the Buckhead Saloon.
Gov. Brian Kemp said state offices will remain closed on Wednesday, Jan. 22.
Georgia State University has closed its campuses for Wednesday and Georgia Tech will have digital learning for its students.

Metro Atlanta is under a winter storm warning until 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22. Portions of north central, northeast, northwest, and west central Georgia can expect heavy snow and accumulations up to one inch. Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, are slick and hazardous. Travel is not advised. The hazardous conditions will continue to impact the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes. The National Weather Service said dry air is eroding from the southwest, and snow is reaching the ground across much of the area from Columbus to Americus to Thomaston.

How much snow could Atlanta get today? That depends. Weather prognosticators say it could up to an inch, but it depends if the storm system. If the arriving storm is weaker and contains less moisture, there might only be flurries or a light coating. Still, the prediction is for an inch or less.
The NWS’s latest report says a layer of dry air is currently causing most of the snow already over Georgia to dissipate before reaching the ground. However, this is expected to change by afternoon as moistening occurs and more snow can reach the ground.

The National Weather Service said in its morning report that the winter storm warning and winter weather advisories have pushed northward. While the heaviest snowfall is expected in central Georgia, metro Atlanta acould now see up to one inch.
NWS warned of travel impacts and said expect road conditions to deteriorate rapidly once snow begins to fall later this morning.

The National Weather Service has released its latest update on tomorrow’s winter storm.
A winter storm warning is in effect from 10 a.m. on Tuesday to 7 a.m. on Wednesday across much of central Georgia with snow accumulation up to three inches.
North Georgia and Metro Atlanta are under a winter weather advisory with a forecast of less than an inch of snow over the same time frame.

Gov. Brian Kemp has declared a State of Emergency, effective immediately, in preparation for the freezing temperatures and winter weather expected to impact Georgia.
The State of Emergency executive order authorizes the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA/HS) to activate the State Operations Center (SOC) and mobilize any needed resources to address potential impacts.
It also allows for the Georgia Department of Defense to provide up to 250 Georgia National Guard troops, should they be needed for preparation, response, and recovery efforts. The State of Emergency will run through Jan. 28.
Kemp also said state offices in the City of Atlanta – including the State Capitol – will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
According to the latest from WSB-TV, Atlanta is forecast to see scattered light snow and snow showers above the I-20 corridor later on Tuesday. Since this winter weather event will be centered more over central and south Georgia, counties in north metro and far north Georgia will likely see very little accumulating snow.

Metro Atlanta is waking up to temperatures in the teens and wind chills in the single digits, according to WSB-TV. Temperatures are expected to stay near or below freezing for the next several days.
The Atlanta Department of Transportaton (ATLDOT) said in a press release that it has started treating roadways ahead of forecasted snow on Jan. 21. “ATLDOT deployed crews to treat priority roadways bridges, overpasses and routes to hospitals, police stations and fire stations,” the release said.

Metro Atlanta is under a winter storm watch for Tuesday, Jan. 21, and Wednesday morning, Jan. 22.
The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will be adding brine to the roadways Sunday and Monday, prioritizing interstates, state routes, bridges, and overpasses.
GDOT said the size and scope of the predicted storm on Jan. 21 is larger than the Jan. 10 event.
“Georgia DOT urges the public to recognize the sheer size of this particular storm. It has the potential to move quickly through our state, but leave significant impacts on a statewide level,” GDOT Commissioner, Russell R. McMurry, P.E., said in a press release. “Please, if you have to be on the roads during the next few days, give our men and women of GDOT room to work safely as we pre-treat the roads for the incoming winter weather. We need time, patience and understanding as our dedicated crews work during this multi-day event.”
Motorists in affected areas are urged to plan ahead and limit travel as much as possible beginning mid-day Tuesday. With at least one to two inches of snow currently predicted across north and central Georgia, including the metro Atlanta area, motorists can expect roadway conditions to deteriorate rapidly once precipitation begins to fall.

Warming centers in the city of Atlanta will be open continuously from Sunday beginning at 8 p.m. through Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 3 p.m.
The first warming center will open at Central Park Recreation Center at 400 Merritts Ave. NE. The second warming center will open at Selena S. Butler Park at 98 William Holmes Borders Senior Drive SE for women and children only.
Old Adamsville Recreation Center at 3404 Delmar Lane NW will serve as an overflow location.
Transportation will be provided Sunday at 8 p.m. from the Gateway Center at 275 Pryor St. SW with return transportation provided by Fulton County from the Gateway Center when the centers are closed.

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, this week’s weather forecast includes dangerously cold air moving into Georgia Sunday night Jan. 19 into Monday, Jan. 20 and lingering through Thursday, Jan. 23.
An excessive cold watch has been issued for north Georgia Monday morning.
A winter storm may impact north and central Georgia on Tuesday and early Wednesday.
Savannah and Coastal Georgia will likely see low temps at or below freezing and into the mid-20s through Wednesday.
Extreme Cold Warnings are likely to be issued along I-20 west of Atlanta, I-85 east of Atlanta, and all points north.
Wind chills from below zero to the teens are forecast to develop in north and central Georgia Monday through Thursday.
Precipitation accumulations vary significantly depending on the northward extend of mid-level moisture and the strength of the low. Uncertainty is high on the exact how much accumulation will occur. Impacts are likely.
Please plan accordingly if you will be outdoors. Prolonged exposure to below-freezing temperatures can cause frostbite. Dress in layers including a hat, face mask, and gloves if you must go outside.
Check on vulnerable people to make sure they have adequately warm shelter indoors.
