THE LATEST EXHIBITION OF Alberta Whittle (b. 1980) options new materially wealthy works made in response to the uncertainty of our modern second. Practically two dozen collage and assemblage-style work, watercolors, mixed-media sculpture, and a single-channel video are on view at Nicola Vassell, a Black woman-owned gallery. The prolonged title of the exhibition (“In the direction of a motherful loving praxis, we forged seeds into the darkness”) is framed across the phrase “motherful,” which in Whittle’s interpretation means “to precise an expanded, genderless sense of care and assist between individuals and species extra typically, an idea her works enact by their formal relationships and materials complexity.” At the moment is the ultimate day of the present. Whittle represented Scotland on the 59th Venice Biennale in 2022. Born in Bridgetown, Barbados, she lives and works in Glasgow. CT
