Black Athletes in the Spotlight: HBCU Sports & Local Highlights

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (WSAV) – The Jacksonville Jaguars completed the fourth day of offseason training activities (OTAs).

There’s a lot of buzz surrounding the Jags after they traded up to the Number two overall draft pick and selected Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter.

There have been a lot of discussions about whether or not the two-way player will compete on both sides of the ball in the NFL. Head Coach Liam Coen said Hunter practiced for the first time with defense on May 21.

He added during through training camp; the goal is to have in practice on side of the ball for the entire day. Meaning, if practices with the offense he will stay with the offense and vice versa.

“We won’t put him in that situation to have him do that,” Coen said. “Although I’m sure he’d probably want to. At the end of the day, he still meets defensively every day that he’s on offense. He’s getting the mental part of it and being able to catch up on some of the communication in some of the corrections off the film from the defensive side of the ball.

“He’s getting a lot of the mental and it would probably be unfair to put him out on the grass and do both and ask him to go do that and see success.”

In Tuesday’s practice, he was wearing a green jersey, which is for the offense, and he took all of his reps during the portion of practice open to the media with the offense. Hunter’s tall, lanky frame definitely stands out. They did not start catching passes until the seventh period of practice.

The next open media availability for the Jaguars is Monday, June 2 at 8:50 a.m. at Miller Electric Center.
