Politics Today: News, Analysis & Debate Across the Spectrum

Tucker Carlson exposed Senator Ted Cruzโ€™s complete deference to Israel by asking him some very basic questions about Iran. Cruz was unable to answer, falling into one rhetorical trap after another until he snapped. The moment, a preview of Wednesdayโ€™s The Tucker Carlson Show, quickly went viral.ย

โ€œHow many people live in Iran by the way?โ€ Carlson asked the Texas senator.

โ€œI donโ€™t know the population,โ€ Cruz replied.ย

โ€œAt all?โ€

โ€œNo, I donโ€™t know the populationโ€ย

โ€œYou donโ€™t know the population of the country you seek to topple?โ€ Carlson replied, clearly surprised.ย

โ€œHow many people are living there?โ€ Cruz asked.

โ€œ92 million.โ€ฆ How could you not know that?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t sit around memorizing population tables.โ€ย

โ€œWell, itโ€™s kind of relevant because youโ€™re calling for the overthrow of the government.โ€ย

Cruz grew continuously frustrated, calling Carlsonโ€™s line of questioning โ€œcute,โ€ while Carlson expressed alarm over the fact that a sitting Republican senator didnโ€™t know very simple information about the country heโ€™s calling for a U.S.-orchestrated coup in. Then, Cruz proceeded to slip.ย ย

โ€œYou donโ€™t believe theyโ€™re trying to murder Trump because youโ€™re not calling for military strikes against them in retaliation,โ€ Carlson said.ย

โ€œWe are carrying out military strikes todayโ€”โ€

โ€œYou said Israel was,โ€ Carlson replied, his ears perking up.ย

โ€œRight, with our help. I said โ€˜we.โ€™ Israel is leading them; weโ€™re supporting them.โ€

โ€œWell, this, youโ€™re breaking news here because the U.S. government last night denied, the National Security Council spokesman Alex Pfeifferย denied, on behalf of Trump, that we were acting on Israelโ€™s behalf in any offensive capacity.โ€ย

โ€œWeโ€™re not bombing them, Israelโ€™s bombing them,โ€ Cruz replied, splitting hairs.ย

โ€œYou just said we were.โ€ฆ This is high stakes, youโ€™re a senator. If youโ€™re saying the United States government is at war with Iran right now, people are listening.โ€ย

Cruz tried to clean up his mess after-the-fact and stuck to the same talking points.

โ€œDid a long interview w/ Tucker. He released a snippet playing a โ€˜gotchaโ€™ on the population of Iran. I declined to play that silly game,โ€ he said. โ€œWATCH the full 2-hr interview, where Tucker ATTACKS Trump, attacks the โ€˜AIPAC lobby,โ€™ & falsely claims Iran is NOT trying to assassinate Trump.โ€
