Key takeaways
  • Morgan erased a 12 point halftime deficit to force overtime; Miles Webb scored six in OT as Delaware State snapped a seven-game skid.
  • Guards Elijah Davis and Alfred Worrell Jr. each scored 18; Rob Lawson added 14 points and nine rebounds.
  • Lady Bears shot 20 percent from the field, missed 12 of 13 threes; Ja'la Bannerman had 14 points and nine rebounds.

NORFOLK, Va. — The Morgan State men’s and women’s basketball teams were both eliminated in the quarterfinals of the MEAC Tournament Thursday.

The men’s team, seeded second, lost 75-70 to Delaware State in overtime in their tournament opener, while the sixth-seeded Lady Bears dropped a 69-43 decision to Norfolk State.

The men, who beat Delaware State twice in the regular season, erased a 12-point halftime deficit to force overtime. However, Miles Webb scored six points in the overtime to pace the Hornets (8-22), who snapped a seven-game losing streak.

Guards Elijah Davis and Alfred Worrell Jr. each had 18 points to lead Morgan (16-18), while Rob Lawson had 14 points and nine rebounds. Davis also had seven rebounds.

Meanwhile, the Lady Bears (5-26) shot just 20 percent from the field, missing 12 of 13 shots from three-point range. Ja’la Bannerman had 14 points and nine rebounds off the bench to pace Morgan, which lost its fourth game in the last five.

NOTES — Men’s coach Kevin Broadus was selected MEAC Coach of the Year in voting conducted by the rest of the league’s coaches and sports information directors. Broadus, in his seventh year, is the first Morgan coach to win league Coach of the Year since Todd Bozeman captured the honors in 2009. Worrell received first-team all-conference honors, while Davis was selected to the all-conference second team.
