Style Spotlight: Looks, Trends & Fashion Inspiration

Key takeaways
  • Quiet, personal project in Love Story launched Narciso Rodriguez's career and popularized the minimalist slip wedding silhouette.
  • Treat long layovers as micro vacations: one great meal, a quick walk, and a cultural stop in cities like Amsterdam, Singapore, Denver.
  • Glossier is scaling back, refocusing on hero products like Boy Brow and Cloud Paint, and leaning into fragrance.

1. TRENDS

I had a very immediate reaction to seeing that Valentino Rockstuds are trying to make a comeback — and it was a hard no! If you lived through the mid-2010s, you know exactly what I mean, they were everywhere (including on me lol)! That said, fashion is clearly in its nostalgia era and the Rockstud is the latest piece getting pulled back into the conversation. Originally launched in 2010, the heels essentially defined a certain era of “edginess” and became one of Valentino’s biggest commercial hits. Now, between celeb sightings, runway revivals, and even a little strategic pop culture placement, they’re creeping back again. Personally, I wish Valentino would give us something new instead of reworking something that already hit peak saturation! I’m ready for a fresh look.

2. TV

If you’ve been watching Love Story, you’ll appreciate this interview with Narciso Rodriguez, who designed Carolyn’s iconic wedding dress. At the time he was relatively unknown in the fashion world, and only after the fact did he start his own collection! There was no grand fashion strategy or pressure — he was simply designing a dress for one of his closest friends (with some help from Azzedine Alaïa). The now-famous slip silhouette came down to their shared instinct that it shouldn’t feel fussy or overdone. In fact, he said they barely even sketched it out… she just adjusted the neckline slightly, and that was it! It’s kind of amazing that such a quiet, personal project ended up launching his career and completely shifting bridal trends for decades!

3. TRAVEL

Got a 7-hour layover? Apparently that’s more than enough time to leave the airport and have a mini travel moment! Treat a long layover like a “micro-vacation” — skip the lounge and actually get into the city, even if it’s just for a few hours! The key is to keep it simple: one great meal, a quick walk, maybe one cultural stop. There are actually so many cities that are ideal for this (like Amsterdam, Singapore, even Denver), as long as the airport is within about 30–45 minutes of the city center. Definitely filing this away for the future, such a fun way to make a long travel day feel a little less like dead time!

4. BEAUTY

Glossier is hitting reset, and it’s probably long overdue! After a few years of trying everything (more products, more stores, more categories), the new CEO is scaling things way back: fewer launches, fewer locations, and a renewed focus on what actually made the brand work in the first place! Glossier built its entire identity on a tightly edited “you but better” approach, and somewhere along the way that ethos got lost. Now they’re doubling down on hero products like Boy Brow and Cloud Paint, and leaning heavily into fragrance. This feels like a bigger reflection of where beauty is right now. The market is so saturated, and brands that try to do too much end up feeling diluted!

5. CULTURE

Mahjong is having a moment right now — and not in the way you might remember from your grandmother’s living room! This piece dives into how the game has been completely rebranded with chic sets, curated game nights, and even full-on lifestyle brands built around it! What was once a niche pastime has turned into a full-blown social phenomenon, especially among younger women. If you’ve been following me for a while, you know how much I’ve enjoyed learning Mahjong and making it a staple of my social life here in NYC! It’s structured, social, and gets you off your phone for a few hours. There’s something appealing about having a standing plan that isn’t just dinner or drinks!

6. STYLE

There are very few pieces in fashion that really never go out of style, and a Burberry trench coat is one of them. Not trendy, not polarizing — just consistently good. This piece dives into the history of the garment, and how it was originally designed for soldiers during World War I who were fighting in the trenches (hence the name…) It’s one of those rare cases where practicality turned into something iconic! If you’re a history buff or fashion lover, read the full piece — it’s quite fascinating!
