Black Athletes in the Spotlight: HBCU Sports & Local Highlights

Key takeaways
  • AJGA provides paid Traveling Internships with travel, lodging, and some meals covered, designed for hands-on experience in sports.
  • Interns work in teams, supporting tournaments across the country, gaining substantial event management experience and building professional networks.
  • Successful alumni secure positions with top-tier organizations like PGA Tour and LPGA, highlighting the internship's strong placement rates.

The American Junior Golf Association (AJGA), a respected nonprofit organization devoted to developing young golfers into college-level athletes, offers a career-launching internship program that blends hands-on experience, travel, professional development, and deep immersion in the sports industry. At the heart of the organization’s careers are its Traveling Internship opportunities.

AJGA interns are paid and can use the internship for school credit if applicable. All travel and lodging are covered along with some food costs during the duration of the internship. The AJGA only hires full-time from the program, which 85% of the full-time staff participated in.

Please note, golf knowledge is NOT required to do the AJGA Internship. The AJGA will teach you everything you need to know!

The Traveling Internships are designed for individuals who thrive in dynamic, on-the-go environments. Interns are grouped into teams—each consisting of eight or nine members with a mix of Operations and Communications roles. These teams travel across the country, supporting AJGA tournaments from spring through summer. Locations vary weekly, as do the tasks: setting up courses, officiating, coordinating with sponsors, managing tournament logistics, and capturing media content for AJGA’s social platforms. Workweeks typically range from 40 to 65 hours, depending on the season.

The logistical support is extensive: AJGA covers travel, lodging, and some meals. Interns also receive a stipend. The role demands resilience and adaptability, offering the chance to build an expansive network and gain tangible event management experience. Importantly, around 85% of current full-time AJGA staff began their journey as an intern.

Program Reach & Impact

In 2024, AJGA received over 1,500 applications worldwide. Seventy-nine individuals were selected as interns; 74 traveled the country while others worked at headquarters. Interns spent months on the road covering dozens of events, collectively tallying thousands of travel miles. These experiences translate into strong placement: many alumni join top-tier organizations like the PGA Tour, LPGA, USGA, TaylorMade, and others.

Aside from its professional value, the internship offers unforgettable personal experiences—forming close-knit teams, visiting new places, and building lifelong friendships. Interns often cite these bonds and the immersive exposure to golf events as defining memories of their AJGA tenure.
