Black Athletes in the Spotlight: HBCU Sports & Local Highlights

At just 13 years old, Alyssa Toni Cleckley is already making waves in the world of junior golf. Standing 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighing 145 pounds, the West Palm Beach, Florida native balances her academics, community involvement, and a budding golf career with impressive maturity.

An 8th grader at BAK Middle School of the Arts, Alyssa majors in Communications. Her passion for learning shines through in her favorite subject, History. “I love learning about our world and how we have evolved,” she said, a reflection of her natural curiosity and drive to understand the bigger picture.

Her journey into golf began unexpectedly in 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. With schools closed and activities restricted, she grew restless at home. Her father introduced her to the game after hearing about a local instructor offering lessons nearby in Royal Palm Beach. “After a few lessons, I developed a love for the game,” Alyssa shared. That spark soon turned into a full-fledged commitment.

Over the past five years, Alyssa has trained under several seasoned professionals. She first worked with Golf Pro Trevor Dodds for two years, followed by two years with Golf Pro Darrell Welder. Currently, she is under the guidance of Ezra Sutton, a professional player on the minor league circuit. Her favorite club is the 54-degree wedge, a tool she praises for its versatility on the course.

Alyssa’s growth as a golfer is underscored by her achievements. One of her fondest memories is scoring 75 to win a South Florida PGA (SFPGA) tournament. With a handicap of 4.4, she has consistently proven her skill and resilience. She is an active member of multiple organizations, including First Tee, SFPGA, NGPDF, ICYG, PGA Junior League, FSGA, and the AAC&YGHOF.

Her competitive record is equally impressive. She secured a win in the SFPGA on July 24, 2025, and has showcased her talent in Drive, Chip and Putt competitions. After placing second in the 2025 Sub-Regionals, she advanced to the Regionals, which will take place on September 6, 2025. Earlier this year, on May 24, 2025, Alyssa was inducted into the African American Collegiate & Youth Golfers Hall of Fame, a testament to her growing influence in the sport.

Behind her success is a strong foundation of family support. Her father plays a pivotal role in her journey, transporting her to practices and tournaments, offering encouragement, and holding her accountable to her goals. Her extended family also shows up at competitions, cheering her on and lending their encouragement.

Alyssa finds inspiration in professional golfer Lydia Ko, whose perseverance and consistent winning record have left a strong impression on her. Like her role model, Alyssa is determined to stay focused and keep pushing forward. “My goal over the next three to five years is to continue growing as a golfer, winning more tournaments, and becoming one of the best in the nation,” she explained.

Yet, Alyssa’s story extends beyond golf. She is deeply involved in her community, demonstrating leadership and service. She is currently a Life Scout in Scouting America, working diligently toward achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. At school, she is a proud member of the National Junior Honor Society. She also contributes to the KOP (Knowledge, Opportunity and Prosperity) Mentoring Network, further demonstrating her commitment to growth and giving back.

Balancing academics, athletics, and community service is no easy feat, but Alyssa manages it with grace and discipline. Her journey reflects not only her dedication to golf but also her determination to make a difference in every area of her life.

With her talent, support system, and unwavering focus, Alyssa Toni Cleckley is poised to become not only a standout golfer but also a role model for her peers and the next generation of athletes.
