Black Athletes in the Spotlight: HBCU Sports & Local Highlights
Florida A&M University faces uncertainty after the arrest of Athletic Director Angela Suggs, just two months into her tenure. Suggs is now under criminal investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for actions tied to her former role as president and CEO of the Florida Sports Foundation, a nonprofit promoting sports statewide.
According to the arrest affidavit, Suggs allegedly misused over $24,000 while at the foundation. On June 10, 2025, she turned herself in at the Leon County Detention Facility and was charged with grand theft, scheme to defraud, and four misdemeanors related to falsifying travel vouchers. She was released the same day on $13,500 bond.
Though the charges stem from her previous job, FAMU placed Suggs on paid administrative leave. Interim President Timothy Beard announced that deputy athletic directors Travis Glasgow and Brittney Johnson will temporarily manage the department.
The university has not released a formal statement on the long-term future of its athletic leadership. As the legal process continues, questions remain about whether an interim director will be appointed and how FAMU will sustain recent growth in athletics amid this leadership crisis.
