Black Athletes in the Spotlight: HBCU Sports & Local Highlights

    Key takeaways
    • DR Meadows scored the showdown winning run, sending Savannah Bananas to the first ever Banana Bowl in Washington D.C.
    • Jesse Cole calls it the biggest event in Banana Ball history, promising original music, special guests, and over-the-top performances
    • Nationals Park in Washington D.C. will host the Banana Bowl, featuring Savannah Bananas versus winner of Loco Beach Coconuts and Texas Tailgaters
    • DR Meadows said the team trained since January, prepared for adversity, and felt ready for this high stakes showdown

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – The No. 1 seeded Savannah Bananas entered Saturday night in must win mode. Following their 7-3 loss to the Party Animals the Bananas needed to win and then win a showdown to earn their spot in October 10th’s Banana Bowl, taking place in Washington D.C.

Savannah led early, scoring in the first inning. They held that lead all the way until the 5th when the Party Animals tied it. Shortly after Jake Skole broke that tie with an RBI single. The Equalizer point also went the Party Animals, giving them a 3-1 lead heading into the ninth inning. It took a three RBI eruption, all of them counting for points in that final inning, pushing the Bananas toward victory. The 4-3 result meant it was time for a showdown. The stakes were high, a spot in the arguably the Savannah Banana’s biggest event to date. It was a local guy, Vidalia, Georgia native DR Meadows scoring the showdown winning-run, sending Savannah to the first ever Banana Bowl in Washington D.C.

“It’s not our first time being at showdowns,” said DR Meadows. “We had our backs against the ball, but it didn’t feel like that at all. We prepared all year, since January for this adversity we faced this weekend.”

“Well, it’s the biggest event in Banana Ball history,” said Jesse Cole. “I mean we’re going to have the biggest performances we’ve ever had, original music. It’s over the top. Special guest and all six teams. I mean, there’s only so much I can say, but we’re going big. This is our Super Bowl, this is our Wrestlemania. We’ve worked towards this and we’re ready for it.”

Nationals Park in Washington D.C will host the Savannah Bananas and the winner of Sunday’s showdown between the Loco Beach Coconuts and the Texas Tailgaters.
