Black Restaurants to Visit During AfroTech

This week, Houston will host AfroTech, the conference that draws tech companies and Black professionals from around the country.  It is going to be a TIME, full of networking and convening with our community after a crazy few weeks.  And no shade to our fellow Texas city, but I imagine that this version of AfroTech will be much different than it was in Austin, simply because of the thriving Black Houston businesses we have here.  That allows us to have a lot of diversity within our Black businesses especially restaurants.  There is truly something for everyone, you just need to find it.  This list breaks down some of my favorite Black restaurants to Visit During AfroTech, and divides them up by the vibe.

Black Owned Staples

As I recently saw on threads “I cannot eat a vibe!” and it’s so true!  For some of us, a great dining experience is simply about the food.  Here are a few spots that are chef driven, really focus on the cuisine and in some cases have been recognized by James Beard for their skills!

Hashbrowns from Squable

Hashbrowns from Squable

  • Lucille’s – One of my favorites, located in the Museum District.  It is a great stop for brunch and also dinner, plus the weather will allow for patio dining.
  • Day 6 Coffee – Located downtown near the conference activities, Day 6 Coffee has great drinks and pastries.
  • Davis Street – Another fave of mine, Davis Street has happy hour and drinks specials throughout the week.
  • Chop ‘n Block – A James Beard nominated concept that highlights West African cuisine, they have two locations, a fast casual and a sit down restaurant with a bar, both near the conference.  Make a point to visi!
  • Gatlin’s Fins & Feathers – The same owners also have a great BBQ spot, but if you are looking for some good down home Soul Food, this is the place.
  • RADO Market – A neighborhood coffee shop in Third Ward, with great food options as well.
  • Kulture – A staple located in downtown Houston near the convention center, this will be the closest Black owned spot near the festivities
  • Late August – Located in the Ion, just outside of downtown, guests can expect Mexican fusion dishes and good drinks.
  • Squable – Helmed by James Beard nominated chef/owner Mark Clayton, Squable is a must visit for foodies that enjoy great unique food options.
  • The Breakfast Klub – Yes, it really is that good.  Yes, there will be a line.  Yes it is worth the wait.  If you plan to go, I’d go earlier in the week.
  • Bludorn – I always add Bludorn to my Black owned lists because they do have a Black partner who is very involved in their concepts from Bludorn to Navy Blue and also Bar Bludorn.  All three concepts are highly regarded in Houston.
  • Warwick – NOW, some will argue that Warwick is more vibey and that’s in part because their owners own a lot of nightlife concepts in Houston.   However, to me it’s a good classic American restaurant.

Some fast stops that are worth it, Trill Burger, Crumbville, Frenchy’s Chicken and Mico’s Hot Chicken.

Black Owned Vibes Dining Restaurants & Bars

I know Houston has become known for vibe dining, places that have a lot of other happenings such as entertainment, hookah and more of a nightlife feel.  Don’t get me wrong, these concepts are also great for different reasons!  I am separating them here simply to manage expectations. Some of you may disagree, but I think it is important to a) know what you like and b) do your research beforehand.

  • Bungalow – I expect Bungalow to be packed during AfroTech due its location, late hours, good food and drinks.
  • Taste Bar & Kitchen – Located downtown across the street from Bungalow, Taste will have a nice crowd for the week as well.
  • Juliet – The facade looks like a movie theater which is fun, I always recommend getting drinks and appetizers there.
  • Thirteen – The James Harden owned concept recently changed their menu to more Asian inspired dishes.  Plus there is an after hours spot that will be hosting AfroTech unofficial events in the basement.
  • Lost & Found – Another great spot near downtown with good food and a bar atmosphere.
  • KISS – Open till 2am, KISS is a great spot to enjoy a crowd, drinks and food

The other thing to keep in mind, because Houstonians LOVE to eat, our bars/clubs will serve full meals and not your typical bar fare.  As such, if you are wanting a meal I suggest you go to a traditional restaurant first then head out for the evening.  Many of our bars have great food, like Prospect Park has long been known for their wings, Rockhouse has some great items as well to name a few.  It is just important that you remember you are at a BAR not a restaurant and adjust your expectations on speed of service/type of service etc.

Quick Notes

Houston is FULL, but if you are considering moving here, please be sure to check out my post about where Black people live.

There will be a lot of events happening through the official conference and unofficial happenings as well (many are detailed on this spreadsheet).  For spots the Black Owned spots that Black Houstonians frequent, check out this list.

I’m also happy to share that I will be speaking at two events this week!  First, I am joining a panel with Ancestry, getting to talk about genealogy.  Next, I am also joining a cool activation at the El Dorado Ballroom called Heard. The event will center around the food documentary Heard, while also highlighting technology in the Black food space.  Register for that event here. Oh and I’m attending the Michelin Texas announcement this week, so I will share those honorees if you want to add those to your Houston list as well.  I hope you all have a fabulous time in my hometown this week!
