There are so many interesting lyrics on “ON & ON,” with one of our favorites being “it’s growing whether you like it or not.” Is there a certain line you’re especially proud of? What does it mean to you?
Thank you! That line highlights the unstoppable nature of life’s progression, regardless of our readiness. Indeed, it’s part of one of the phrases I’m particularly proud of: “Fun ain’t got no end, it’s growing whether you like it or not.” It captures the essence of joy and freedom that persists, even amid challenges. This song is about embracing the ongoing journey of life with enthusiasm and resilience.
The production of “ON & ON” matches the optimism and energy of the lyrics so well! When you’re working on a new song, what usually comes first: the lyrics or the instrumental?
As you know, I collaborate with the legendary Bruno Sanchioni, alias BBE, Age of Love… Together, we compose the music first, and then I create the vocal melody. Only after that do I write the lyrics, as I have a deep desire to ensure that the sounds of the words and their meaning match perfectly with the music and emotion already emanating from each note. I let the mood of the music guide the words, creating a seamless blend of sound and story.
Something else that stands out about “ON & ON” is how well you capture the emotions of the lyrics in your voice, like the growls on lyrics like “I’m longing for freedom.” How do you get into the right mindset or energy before you record a song?
Before recording, I immerse myself back into the mindset I had when I wrote the lyrics. I reflect on what I want to convey through those words because this is the moment where I can make the message real and ensure it’s truly heard. It’s about reconnecting with the emotion and intention behind each line to deliver an authentic performance.
You’ve said that “ON & ON” is like an “incantation to let go of worries and enjoy every moment” – what helps you stay grounded and focused on the current moment in everyday life?
My family is my anchor, providing me with love and support that keeps me grounded. Additionally, boxing plays a significant role in helping me stay focused. It’s not just about physical strength but also mental discipline, which helps me maintain balance and presence in my daily life.
For anyone who isn’t familiar with your music already and enjoys “ON & ON,” which of your other songs would you recommend to them to get a feel for who you are as an artist?
I would suggest listening to “Not Unreal.” It’s a piano-driven piece that showcases a different, more introspective side of me. It’s about vulnerability and finding strength in softness, offering a deeper dive into my artistic essence.
You released “Not Unreal” a few months after “ON & ON,” and it’s such a beautiful piano-based song! What was the creative process behind the track like?
“Not Unreal” originally had a richer arrangement with more instruments, but as I listened to it repeatedly, it became clear that stripping it down to its essentials was the right choice. The voice and lyrics are the heart of this song, and by focusing on the piano and minimal accompaniment, we allowed those elements to truly shine and carry the emotional weight.
This October will mark ten years since you released your first single, “The Cure!” How do you feel you’ve grown as an artist since releasing it?
Wow, ten years! I’ve evolved tremendously. I’ve grown more confident in my sound, learned to trust my instincts, and embraced the ever-changing nature of creativity. It’s been a journey of self-discovery and constant reinvention.
What can your fans look forward to in 2025?
