Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens wants the Olympic cauldron to stay where it is, in Summerhill, according to a letter posted on social media.
As Channel 2 Action News has reported, the Summerhill neighborhood is fighting against a proposal to move the cauldron from where it has been for 30 years to Centennial Olympic Park.
The letter from Dickens was posted to a social media account dedicated to Summerhill neighbors.
Dated Aug. 13, Dickens’ letter was addressed to Jeff Cravens, president of Atlanta Legacy ‘96 and partners.
The letter said in part, “The Olympic cauldron should remain in the neighborhood it has called home for the past 30 years — just as thousands of residents have.”
Dickens also said in the letter, “the decision to relocate the Olympic cauldron does not reflect the collaborative approach these communities deserve. The voices of these communities should be heard. A city’s greatest moments should belong to its people first.”
Georgia State University is proposing to move the cauldron from its longtime home in Summerhill to Centennial Olympic Park, saying the relocation would better connect Atlanta’s Olympic legacy downtown.
