SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Savannah Christian football has started 5-0 for the first time in a decade.
The Raiders finished second in the state in class AAA last season but fell to Cedar Grove in the championship 49-28. This season the team is looking to redeem themselves in Atlanta and win the title.
“We don’t get caught up by own own selfish desires but we get caught up in the team aspect, everybody doing it together it doesn’t matter who gets the credit, we just wanna get it done,” said Head Coach Baker Woodward. “I think if we focus on that maybe we’ll get another shot to play at Mercedes Benz.”
The Raiders boast a dominant defense and rushing attack, with several players receiving college offers.
“Up front we weigh about 280 pounds on the offensive line, we’ve got two Power 5 guys on the offensive line, we’ve got two tight ends who are really good at blocking so we get into 12 personal we can just run the ball,” said tight end Logan Brooking. “We can just power through everybody.”
Another key part of success on the ground comes from star running back Zo Smalls. Smalls is averaging 169 rushing yards per game and has 13 total touchdowns.
“He’s one of the best running backs in the state,” said Woodward. “He’s done great in the classroom and the weight room. He’s one of the strongest guys on our team pound for pound.”
This team has left nothing up for interpretation, in their closest game of the season the Raiders still won by 21.
This week Savannah Christian is preparing to square off against Savannah Country Day in a big rivalry matchup.
“It’s really just a great opportunity because around the city of Savannah there’s not a lot of rivalries,” said Woodward. “it goes a lot farther than just Friday night after this is over they’re gonna be talking about it for years to come.”
Savannah Christian will travel to Savannah Country Day to take them on at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
