Nonprofit Spotlight – Making a Difference in Our Community:

Key takeaways
  • Free mammogram screenings offered by McIntosh County Health Department and Southeast Georgia Health System on October 30.
  • No-cost screenings are available for women aged 40+ who are uninsured; insurance card is required for insured.
  • Early detection through mammograms significantly improves outcomes, making regular screenings vital starting at age 40.

The McIntosh County Health Department is teaming up with the Southeast Georgia Health System (SGHS) to provide free mammogram screenings to eligible individuals on Thursday, October 30, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The event will take place at the Eulonia Piggly Wiggly, where the SGHS Mobile Mammography Unit will be located at 15759 U.S. Highway 17 in Townsend. This is a walk-in event. Appointments are not necessary.

No-cost mammograms are available for women aged 40 and older who are uninsured and meet income guidelines. Women with insurance are also welcome but must bring their insurance card.

We can provide mammogram orders for:

  • Women who qualify for the Georgia Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (BCCP)
  • Women with insurance who are unable to get a doctor’s order

Why Screenings Matter

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the United States, and 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Early detection significantly improves treatment options and outcomes.

Mammograms are low-dose X-rays that can detect breast cancer early, sometimes years before physical symptoms appear. For women at average risk, regular screenings are recommended starting at age 40.

The BCCP offers free or low-cost breast and cervical cancer screenings year-round to eligible women across the state. Visit coastalhealthdistrict.org/bccp to learn more about the program.

For more information on the free mammogram event, please call the McIntosh County Health Department at 912-832-5473.
