Politics Today: News, Analysis & Debate Across the Spectrum

As Director of National Intelligence (DNI), Tulsi Gabbard continues to release declassified documents and public statements alleging that former President Obama and members of his administration played a central role in “manufacturing” the narrative of Russian collusion in an effort to undermine Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, the charges, countercharges, and flat-out denials — including from Obama himself — continue to intensify.

According to Gabbard, the newly released reports and supporting materials reveal that senior Obama officials directed the intelligence community to create a misleading assessment, claiming — without basis — that Russia interfered in the election specifically to help Trump defeat Hillary Clinton.

On Thursday, Rep. Ryan Zinke (R-MT), who served as Secretary of the Interior during Trump’s first administration, told Newsmax that the revelations being made by Gabbard’s office concerning Obama’s involvement in Russian collusion narrative confirm “what we all knew.”

Speaking on Newsmax’s “Wake Up America,” Zinke was clear about what he and others knew at the time about the Democrat narrative:

You had national intelligence collection assets spying on the president-to-be in the case of Russian collusion, which led to an impeachment.

Then you had the national collection assets spying on the President of the United States. That’s what the Ukrainian obstruction of justice [investigation] was all about.

And you had national collection assets spying on a president when he left office. That’s what Mar-a-Lago is about.

Zinke told Newsmax that such investigations into Trump by Obama and the Democrats reveal “politicizing a branch of government,” not to mention spying on an opponent to “disable him to the degree you can.”

    Was there ever any doubt?

Incidentally, the first of two three-ring circus impeachments of Trump by House Democrats — with an eager assist from former Wyoming Republican Rep. Liz Cheney — was based on concocted information (bald-faced lies) about collusion between Team Trump and Russian strongman, President Vladimir Putin.

While commending Gabbard for doing a “great job,” Zinke said:

[We] need to get to the bottom of this and hold people accountable for their actions. We need action on it and make sure it doesn’t happen again.

I think it goes right to the core of the Constitution and makes sure you faithfully do the duties of the office. So at the end of the day, I think we can come together on this and make sure no president abuses that power.

While every word of the above is true, as we’ve seen, far too many times, words from Republican lawmakers don’t turn into actions; words don’t lead to the prosecution, much less to formal charges, about Democrat bad guys who never seem to face consequences for their actions.

Will it be different, this time? Perhaps, now that many deep-staters have been purged from the Department of Justice and other sectors of government. Only time will tell.
