Black Athletes in the Spotlight: HBCU Sports & Local Highlights

SAVANNAH, Ga.-As the calendar officially turns to April, the race to the postseason continues for our spring sports programs at Savannah State. This week, our baseball, softball, and track & field teams are all in action and the football program closes their spring practice with the annual spring football game as we cover all bases in our latest installment of “This Week In Tiger Athletics.

Track & Field

After a solid showing at this past weekend’s Orange & Blue Relays, the Savannah State men’s & women’s track and field teams will make their way to Albany, Georgia to take part in the 2026 edition of the Alice Coachman Invitational, hosted by Albany State University. The action takes place at the Robert Cross Track & Field Complex on ASU’s campus on Saturday, April 12th.

Softball

After taking last week off, the Savannah State softball squad gets back to action with five games on this week’s docket. The Lady Tigers will first travel to Augusta, Georgia to faceoff against former SIAC rival, Paine College on Wednesday, April 8th in a doubleheader at 1:00pm and 3:00pm. Then, Savannah State returns home and back to SIAC East Division action as they will open a three-game series against Benedict College. The action begins on Friday, April 10th with a doubleheader starting at 2:00pm and 4:00pm and concludes on Saturday, April 11th with a single game starting at 12:00pm at the Lady Tiger Softball Field.

Baseball

The Tigers had a successful weekend in their last action on the road against Tuskegee, winning two out of three games to remain in the upper half of the SIAC baseball standings. Savannah State now turns their attention to a key home three-game East Division series against archrival Edward Waters. The series opens with a single game on Friday, April 10th at 3:00pm, then wraps up with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 11th at 1:00pm & 4:00pm at Tiger Field.

Football

The inaugural spring football practice period for new head football coach Thomas Howard and the Savannah State football program concludes on Sunday, April 12th with the annual Orange & Blue Spring Football Game. Kickoff is set for 3:00pm at Theodore A. “Ted” Wright Stadium. Admission to the spring game is free and fans can get their first glimpses at the 2026 edition of the Gridiron Tigers.
