STATESBORO, Ga. (WSAV) — The Georgia Southern football team appears to be rolling. They have won three straight contests and are in sole possession of first place in the East Division of the Sun Belt Conference.
“We thought we were going to need to be aggressive in every phase to be able to get a “W” that started defensively with trying to get pressure on the quarterback, trying to have the opportunity to be first and second down efficient and get into some third and longs,” Helton said. “Get some hits, get some areas, get some sacks, get some tipped balls and we were able to accomplish that with six sacks and nine tackles for loss and really doing a great job in there against their really good run game.”
The defense has performed well in the last three contests, giving up under 20 points a game.
“We were on the plus side of turnovers coming in the game and then you go, you have a bad game and you go four to nothing,” Helton said. “Now you’re minus one. We’re sitting right at that borderline where we really need to have some get some turnovers defensively like we had been the two games prior with six turnovers in the two games prior.”
This week, the Eagles have a short week to prepare for a road game against conference for Old Dominion.
“This would be the first time I’ve played on Thursday night,” tight end Tyler Fromm said, “So it’ll be a new test for me. Just getting enough sleep. Being able to prepare a lot more mentally. Being a short week usually we have Sunday and Monday to really get our legs back under us.”
Georgia Southern has two less days to prepare for this matchup. The winner of the contest will be the top team in the East Division since Marshall has an open date this week.
“You don’t think about at all,” defensive lineman Latrell Bullard said, “I take the day by day. And I emphasize with the defensive team when we have our meetings. Don’t think ahead. Don’t think weeks later. Just think about today and get better today.”
“I’ve only been here for, I don’t know, ten months, but, you know, it feels like I’ve been with these guys forever,” Fromm said.
Georgia Southern’s game against Old Dominion will be on the road. It will kick off Thursday at 7 p.m. and air on ESPN2.
