Kendall Murry reports that the year 2025 continues to kick off with low temperatures expected throughout North and Central Georgia, according to National Weather Service Atlanta. A wind advisory was expanded to include the regions at 4 a.m. Monday, and has been extended into early Tuesday morning.

The move is one local advocacy groups are applauding and that President-elect Donald Trump quickly condemned and vowed to reverse, which may prove difficult.

Sarah Kallis and Kristi York Wooten report that mourners are flocking to the Carter Center in Atlanta to pay tribute to former President Jimmy Carter during a period of public repose. Carter died on Dec. 29, 2024 in Plains, Ga. at 100 years old.

Chris Boyette and Elizabeth Wolfe report that Ted Turner, the 86-year-old media mogul and philanthropist who founded CNN, is recovering from pneumonia and “is doing well in rehab,” a spokesperson said Monday. Turner was hospitalized with a mild case of pneumonia and is now recuperating at a rehabilitation facility, Phillip Evans, the chief communications officer for Turner Enterprises, said in a statement.

Joe Hotchkiss reports, President Joe Biden has signed a bill into law requiring the continued upkeep of Augusta’s New Savannah Bluff Lock and Dam. Under the new Thomas R. Carper Water Resources Development Act of 2024, the 87-year-old lock and dam will be fully repaired to keep the pool level along Augusta’s riverfront at 114.5 feet.

Tammy Joyner reports that the three-year, $392 million renovation of the Georgia state Capitol will come to a halt next week so as not to disrupt Georgia lawmakers’ 2025 legislative session when it convenes on Monday. Renovations began on the 141-year-old state Capitol last April. Visitors and motorists traveling near the Gold Dome this past summer saw scaffolding used to replace some of the gold atop the dome, phase one of the project.

Hunter Riggall reports that the Cobb County Board of Ethics voted unanimously Monday to dismiss an ethics complaint filed against Cobb Chairwoman Lisa Cupid over the county’s education campaign ahead of the recent transit sales tax referendum. Conservative activist Lance Lamberton had filed the complaint, arguing Cupid violated state law by allowing public funds to be used to campaign in support of the 30-year tax.

Tammy Joyner reports, state Republicans took the unusual step Monday of ousting former lieutenant governor Geoff Duncan from the political party. The State Executive Committee of the Georgia Republican Party voted unanimously Monday to expel Duncan from “any further participation or any future association with the party,” the organization said in a statement.

The Atlanta lawmaker pulls double duty as both a congresswoman and the state party chair, a volunteer role that is unpaid.
