Georgia Watch Pushes to Protect Consumers from Rising Energy Costs Amid Data Center Boom – Georgia Watch

Data centers used 10 to 50 times as much electricity as normal commercial buildings, not to mention the added costs of upgrading transmission lines. State Senator Chuck Hufstetler wants the data companies to cover the cost. “We welcome them here and we want them to pay their fair share.” Liz Coyle with the consumer advocacy group Georgia Watch tells me Georgians shouldn’t have to foot the bill. “There are people in this state who are having to choose to pay their power bill versus affording their medicine and their other health expenses, even putting food on the table.” The law would not apply to the state’s EMCs.
