Wellness That Matters: Black Health News & Community Care

    Key takeaways
    • Seal drafts around windows, doors, and outlets to stop heat loss and block cold air with door stoppers.
    • Insulate windows using heavy thermal curtains, bubble wrap, or window insulation film to retain warmth.
    • Add rugs and carpets to insulate cold floors and keep feet warm, especially in high-traffic areas.
    • Rearrange furniture so heaters aren’t blocked and sofas/beds are away from cold walls and windows for better heat circulation.
    • Use portable heaters and sun wisely: run heaters by room when needed and open curtains by day, close at dusk to trap heat.

During the cold winter season, one longs for a warm and cosy space. However, if you have a heat problem with your house, such that it loses heat quickly, you’re probably wondering how it’ll make you warmer. Fortunately, there are practical things you can do to improve the heating condition of your home. Here are some easy and effective ways to keep the cold out and the warmth in.

    Cracks in the House

Cracks in the house can make it much colder than it really is because heat escapes through tiny cracks around windows, doors, and even electrical outlets. To fix this, check for cracks by passing your hand through the window frames and doors. If you feel air coming in, it’s a possible leak, so consider fixing it. At the bottom of the door, place a stopper that will block cold air in.

Insulate Windows with Curtains or Film

You can close the windows, but still have some cold air come in. To prevent this, insulate by using thermal curtains that are heavy to trap heat, place bubble wrap on the dump glass, and get a window insulation film.

    Add Rugs and Carpets

Tile, wood, or laminate flooring becomes cold during winter. To improve this, lay down thick rugs or carpets to insulate the floor and keep your feet warm. Even small area rugs in high-traffic zones can make a big difference in comfort.

    Rearrange Furniture for Warmth

Arrange your furniture in your house to ensure it’s not blocking the heater to allow for proper circulation of heat. Additionally, move your sofas and beds away from the wall and windows so you to keep warm. This small change can make rooms feel warmer without touching the thermostat.

    Use Portable Heaters Wisely

Even if your house is well-insulated, have a portable electric or oil-filled heater in the home. You might need to use it separately in different rooms, which provides you with an option of how to heat your home. When you’re using the heater, time it so you don’t los electricity or overheat.

    Dress Warmly

Sometimes, the simplest tricks are the most effective. Dress warmly indoors with cosy socks, layered sweaters, and blankets. For your home, add fabric layers such as cushions, throws, and curtains to retain warmth and make spaces feel more inviting.

    Let the Sun In

Even in the coldest months, natural sunlight provides some heat, so during the day, open the curtains, keep the window glass clean to let in more light, and close curtains as soon as dusk falls to trap the warmth.

    Final Thoughts

Keeping your home warm in winter doesn’t have to lead to high energy bills or complex renovations. By combining small, affordable improvements such as sealing drafts, adding rugs, and using curtains smartly, in combination with good heating habits, you can create a home that’s both cozy and efficient.
