Aging Well: News & Insights for Seniors and Caregivers

    Key takeaways
    • Medicare and Medi-Cal are separate programs with different eligibility rules and benefit scopes.
    • Medicare primarily covers hospital, physician, prescription drugs, and home health services.
    • Medi-Cal pays Medicare premiums and covers long term services and supports, including nursing homes and personal care.
    • Medi-Cal acts as payer of last resort, reducing out-of-pocket costs for dual eligible older adults.
    • Justice in Aging's factsheet explains coordination, eligibility, and enrollment help for low-income older adults.

Hay subtítulos disponibles tanto en español como en inglés. Para seleccionar un idioma, haga clic en el botón de CC en la esquina inferior derecha del video y elija su idioma.

This presentation is a companion to Justice in Aging’s factsheet, in English, How Medicare and Medi-Cal Work Together for Older Adults, and Spanish, Cómo Funcionan Medicare Y Medi-Cal de Manera Conjunta Para Apoyar Los Adultos Mayores. In California, over a million people get their health insurance through Medicare and Medi-Cal but few people understand how these programs work. This presentation discusses the basics of these programs, including benefits covered under Medicare and Medi-Cal, the differences between the two programs, and how Medicare and Medi-Cal work together on behalf of low-income older adults.

Both English and Spanish subtitles are available for this video. To pick a language, click the CC button in the bottom right corner of the video and choose your language.
