    Key takeaways
    • French officials aim to block Ye's June 11 performance at the Vélodrome in Marseille.
    • Laurent Nuñez says the Marseille concert is under review for possible criminal offenses and public order risks, per Le Monde.
    • Denied U.K. entry forced the Wireless Festival to cancel Ye's headline slot; ticket holders will receive full refunds.
    • Despite bans, Ye sold out a recent Los Angeles show and released album Bully with major collaborators.

Uncertainty is mounting over whether Kanye West will take the stage in France this summer, as officials signal that his planned performance could be blocked amid ongoing backlash to his past antisemitic remarks.

West, who now goes by Ye, is currently scheduled to perform on June 11 at the Vélodrome stadium in Marseille, France. However, local French officials have publicly announced their intent to block the rap star from taking the stage.

French authorities have grown increasingly vocal in their opposition of Ye taking the stage at the hallowed venue, with Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez confirming that a June concert in Marseille is under review.

According to French newspaper Le Monde, officials are reportedly weighing whether West’s prior statements “risk constituting a criminal offense and if public order is threatened.”

A rep for West did not immediately respond to Rolling Stone‘s request for comment.

Nuñez has met with regional officials, including the prefect of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, Jacques Witkowski, and Marseille Mayor Benoît Payan, to discuss possible action.

Payan has been particularly outspoken, stating: “I refuse to let Marseille be a showcase for those who promote hatred and unapologetic Nazism,” Payan wrote on X. “Kanye West is not welcome at the Vélodrome, our temple of living together and of all Marseillais.”

His remarks reflect a broader sentiment among local leaders, many of whom believe West’s public apology for his past comments has done little to repair trust. Though the rapper issued a widely circulated apology, it has, by many accounts, fallen on deaf ears.

The controversy extends beyond France. West was recently barred from headlining Wireless Festival after filing a travel application with the U.K. Home Office that was denied.

Festival organizers confirmed the fallout, stating: “As a result of the Home Office banning Ye from entering the United Kingdom, Wireless Festival has been forced to cancel. All ticket holders will receive an automatic full refund.”

Prior to the denial of his travel application, news of Ye’s performance at the Wireless Festival led Pepsi and Diageo to pull their sponsorship of the event after West was announced as the Wireless Festival’s headliner.

Despite these setbacks, West continues to draw massive audiences elsewhere. His recent Los Angeles performance reportedly sold out within minutes, drawing tens of thousands of fans and featuring elaborate stage design and a career-spanning set list.

The rapper has also remained active musically, releasing his latest studio album, Bully, which debuted to strong streaming numbers and features collaborations with Travis Scott, CeeLo Green, Peso Pluma, and André Troutman.
