Kicking Off 2025 with New Year Themes: Health and Community

We’re halfway through a decade and the world keeps serving us surprises. So, I understand. New Year resolutions don’t always work. You set goals and then forget or get uninspired and give up half-way. Setting lofty and unrealistic resolutions that are most likely very difficult to attain can be a set-up for failure. And yet, the habit of starting the year with a focus in mind can help you experience greater clarity, deep purpose and personal fulfillment as you journey through 2025. Last year, I created a multi-year vision board and although everything on it didn’t happen, I am still optimistic for things to come. Therefore, I will be tapping into the themes of health and community. If you’re wondering about resolutions but cringe at the thought, you can think of them as themes or areas of focus for the year. Keep reading for some insight and inspiration on living the excellent life.

Health is Wealth

I am a proponent of the idea that health is wealth because nothing can be achieved or sustained without proper wellbeing. This year, you can take a three-pronged approach to taking care of your health in a way that factors in the physical, mental and emotional. These three parts are linked and incredibly important for proper function. Healthy mind = healthy body. You can start with a form of self-care that you really enjoy such as exercise or mindfulness and then work your way up into other activities from there. For me, I am making every effort to move my body often in a bid to stay healthy and fit. I have a daily step goal that is realistic and within reach. Right now, its winter in Canada which means we hardly get enough sunlight. Taking vitamin D will be crucial as well as eating a lot of vegetables and reducing sugar.

Power of Community

No man is an island. I know some people. Good friends from the Christian faith community, and others I’ve met through professional networking that have become buddies. They are all a part of my community and are the basis of a strong support system. I liken the relationships with all these individuals to plants that need sun, water and other nutrients for growth. You have to cultivate these relationships and provide the right conditions for them to thrive. This is why I have chosen to be selective with my energy and picky with where I invest my time. I love the idea of approaching each interaction with the right amount of depth and substance that is needed to make it meaningful and enriching. By placing your best efforts in the people that matter the most, you will be able to strengthen bonds of friendship and support. Also remember, that it is reciprocal and so you are to give just as much as you receive. To do that, your cup needs to be full so that you have something to offer whenever you take. The general idea is that we get to our desired destination faster, if we travel in groups rather than in isolation.

According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, people with high social support are more likely to report being happy, having high psychological well-being, and having high life satisfaction. They are also more likely to report a strong sense of belonging to their community and to report their mental health as “very good” or “excellent.” For this reason, family  is everything. It is like a community support system that holds you up in the moments you need it the most. Imagine a situation where you have no family. It would be a pretty difficult existence, especially not having someone to talk and relate with on a regular basis. I cannot imagine what a life like that would feel like and frankly, I don’t want to think about it. I have realized that in general, people are interdependent beings. We need others to basically survive and thrive. That said, it is also best to have the right people in your community and not the wrong ones, so be careful and intentional in your approach.

Stress-free Ways to Achieve Your New Year Goals

Life is not always a joyride. No matter how much we want to remain absolutely zen, stress always has a sly way of creeping into the situation. I am aware of this and so I’m including some simple ways in which I plan to keep on track with goals but in a stress-free way. You are not alone in wanting a stress-less year. I entered into 2025 with so much peace in my heart and so, I really intend to keep things as they are with these strategies that will come in handy for when needed. You can also try them too.

Accept what is and be content: There is nothing that adds stress to life more than not being satisfied with your current situation. It is true that the act of always wanting more can amplify our anxiety and leave us in a state of constant dissatisfaction. Don’t beat yourself up because you are not where you think you should be. Accepting where you are at and being content with your outcomes will not only create more satisfaction but it might help you to eventually do and achieve more in the long run.

Stay away from all negativity: It’s very important to curate what you consume – whether its music, movies or even social media content. These things can unconsciously affect the psyche leading to either positive or negative outcomes depending on their content. In essence, what I am saying is you can try to avoid stressful situations, keep away from toxic or drama-filled people, and protect your energy.

Focus on one or a few things: Its natural to be so motivated that you want to be a superhero and solve the world’s problems including your own. I would encourage you to slow down and focus on one or a few things each quarter that are small and actionable. Doing this will ensure you do not get overwhelmed and that you won’t eventually give up halfway due to the list of insurmountable tasks.

Get an accountability partner: Having someone who roots for you and pushes you to get things done is definitely beneficial. There is a saying that goes, “if you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.” I describe accountability as walking towards your goals alongside someone else because two heads are always better than one. The other person brings insights, ideas and intention that lines up with the direction you are headed.

How are you planning to have a good start to the year?
