TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WSAV) – Those looking to drive on and off Tybee Island will have to wait Friday morning.
US-80 is shut down between Bull River Bridge and Lazaretto Bridge after Helene’s impact overnight. The road shut down at 6 a.m. Friday morning. Officials say they don’t see the highway re-opening for the next couple of hours.
This is due to marsh grass completely covering the roadway while at the same time, water is coming over the roadway – which increases with the tides. This debris covers the roadway driving eastbound before Fort Pulaski.
Anyone hoping to pass will have to wait for crews to clear out the road and debris.
Officials say a unique note is that there are mounds of seagrass this time covering the road, displaying how strong Helene’s winds have been out near Tybee Island.
Chatham County Police and Tybee Police will have the highway shut down until further notice.
