SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Savannah will be home to a professional women’s basketball team, in a league called “Upshot.”
The new team, which doesn’t have a name yet, will share Enmarket arena with the Ghost Pirates. Both teams are already owned and operated by Zowyer Sports and Entertainment.
Savannah was chosen as one of the four “founding” teams in the league along with Jacksonville. The other two teams have yet to be announced.
Each team will play a 40-game season, with 20 of those being at home.
Donna Orender, the leagues commissioner and former WNBA commissioner, also said that the league may even start with six teams.
“I think this league has the ability to establish itself as a national league,” said Orender. “I can see us going to 40 or 50 different markets as the talent grows.”
