Fresh from the Kitchen: Recipes & Food Inspiration

    Key takeaways
    • Key ingredients: cube steak, beef broth, onion, dry onion soup mix, arrowroot or cornstarch, optional butter.
    • Whisk broth, starch, and dry onion soup mix until smooth; season steaks and cook on HIGH 3 to 4 hours or LOW 6 to 8.
    • No need to brown the cube steak first; add raw steaks directly to the slow cooker.
    • Store-bought dry onion soup packets are fine but may void Paleo or Whole30 compliance and could affect gluten-free status.
    • Leftovers keep in the refrigerator up to 4 days; double the recipe and use a larger slow cooker for more servings.

This slow cooker cube steak is a savory, fuss-free recipe. Tenderized beef slow cooks in a rich onion gravy the cooks directly in the crockpot along with the meat. Using only 5 ingredients, this easy cube steak crockpot recipe pairs perfectly with anything that will soak up that flavorful sauce. Instructions to make this low-carb, paleo, and Whole30 compatible cube steak in the Instant Pot are also included.

    FAQs & Tips

    What is cube steak?

Cube steak is top round or top sirloin that has been tenderized before it’s sold. The tenderizing process leaves small holes in the meat, giving it a “cubed” appearance. Cube steak is cut from a tough portion of beef which makes it a great cut of beef for the low and slow method of the slow cooker.

Do you need to brown the cube steak first?

You do not. Add the cube steaks directly to the slow cooker raw.

Do you have to use the homemade dry onion soup mix?

Nope. Feel free to substitute a store-bought packet. If you do so, this recipe will no longer be  paleo or Whole30 compatible and it may not be gluten-free depending on the ingredients in the packet.

    Can you double this recipe?

Yes! I made a small batch but you can easily double the recipe and use a larger slow cooker.

Can you add other vegetables to this?

Absolutely. I only added onion. Other suggestions include mushrooms, bell pepper, or frozen peas and carrots.

    How do you store leftovers?

Store leftover crockpot cube steak in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

What size slow cooker did you use?

I use small 3.5-quart slow cooker. Feeding a larger crowd? Double the recipe and use a larger 6-quart slow cooker!
