Black Athletes in the Spotlight: HBCU Sports & Local Highlights

Key takeaways
  • Marshall Faulk expected to be named Southern University football head coach, per local report.
  • Faulk currently is Colorado’s running backs coach under Deion Sanders.
  • Faulk’s Hall of Fame credentials: 12 NFL seasons, 12,279 rushing yards, 100 rushing TDs, inducted in 2011.
  • Southern fired coach Terrence Graves; team is 1-10 with Fred McNair as interim coach.

Southern University will become the latest HBCU to gamble on a former NFL player as a head coach.

According to a report by Kevin Batiste Jr. of Baton Rouge TV station WAFB, the Jaguars will announce Pro Football Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk as the program’s next football coach Monday.

HBCU media YouTube personality Scottay of Offscript TV first reportedon a live stream broadcast of the show earlier this month that Faulk spoke with school officials and is “the leading candidate” for the job.

Faulk currently serves as Colorado’s running backs coach under Deion Sanders.

Faulk, 52, played 12 seasons in the NFL for the Indianapolis Colts and the St. Louis Rams, rushing for 12,279 yards and 100 touchdowns along with 6,875 receiving yards and 36 touchdowns.

He won the 2000 NFL Most Valuable Player award, collecting over 2,100 yards from scrimmage and scoring 26 touchdowns, the fifth highest single-season total of all-time. He was inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011.

Southern fired second-year coach Terrence Graves after a 1-6 start. Former Alcorn State head coach Fred McNair is serving as interim coach. The Jaguars are 1-10 heading into the Bayou Classic this weekend in Faulk’s hometown of New Orleans against Grambling.
