PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC—During her visit to Suriname, the United Nations independent expert on human rights, Cecilia Bailliet, will meet with several stakeholders, including government officials, civil society organizations, and private sector representatives.
Bailliet paid a courtesy call on Foreign Affairs, International Business and International Cooperation, Albert Ramdin, and her visit will help her prepare a report to be presented to the UN Human Rights Council in June this year.
Bailliet was appointed in 2023 by the UN Human Rights Council as an independent expert with the mandate to report on countries’ situations in human rights and international solidarity. Her work includes studying rights closely linked to international solidarity’s fundamental values.
The ministry said that during the meeting, Ramdin noted that Suriname remains committed to protecting and promoting human rights and is currently working on establishing an independent Human Rights Institute.
Bailliet’s one-week visit to Suriname is essential to the UN independent expert’s mandate. She will provide direct, first-hand information and visit Indigenous and tribal communities, including the Palumeu.
