Let’s be real: how many of us abandon our New Year’s resolutions before the month of February even ends? It’s easy to set a huge, ambitious goal, thinking that once we reach it, we’ll finally feel “complete” or “happy.” But here’s the truth: it’s not about doing more. It’s about making space for what truly matters. This year, I’m focusing on shedding the old, the limiting, and the unnecessary. 2025 is my year to let go of the things that no longer serve me, so I can make room for new opportunities and a renewed sense of purpose. Whether it’s physical clutter, outdated beliefs, or habits that no longer align with my goals, letting go is the first step in embracing growth and change.
Things to Let Go of in 2025
Here are the 9 things I’m choosing to let go of in 2025 for a fresh start:
1. Old Clothes
I’ve lost over 50 pounds over the past two years, and let me tell you, my wardrobe has fluctuated right along with that. I had clothes that I once wanted to fit into that aren’t even my style anymore, and things that—thankfully—are too big for me now. Before heading back to work in the new year, I made a conscious decision to purge my closet. I donated pieces that no longer fit or serve me, making room for things that truly align with who I am now. Plus, it feels so good to know that someone else will be able to use them!
2. Anything That Needs to Be Purged
Who says spring cleaning has to wait until, well, spring? For me, if something isn’t adding value, it’s time to let it go. That goes beyond my wardrobe—it applies to everything from the pile of papers on my desk to the clutter that accumulates in my everyday bag. By clearing out what no longer serves me, I’ve made space for new energy and fresh beginnings. I did all of this at the start of the year, and honestly, it was so refreshing. My NYC apartment now feels lighter and more organized.
3. Assumptions
I’ve learned that assuming things can lead to miscommunication and misunderstandings. In 2025, I’m letting go of assumptions and embracing curiosity and confidence. Instead of making judgments based on what I think is true, I’m giving myself the freedom to dig deeper and ask questions. By getting the full picture, I’m empowering myself to make more informed decisions in both my personal and professional life.
4. Social Media Accounts That Don’t Lift You Up
I’ll be the first to admit that I mindlessly scroll through Instagram and other social media platforms. But in 2025, I’m curating my feed to include only accounts that inspire, encourage, and educate me. If something leaves me feeling drained, uninspired, or worse—like I’m not enough—it’s time to unfollow. I want my mental energy to go toward things that truly benefit me and help me grow. And yes, funny memes make the cut too!
5. Limiting Beliefs About Money and Success
Let’s talk about money. The way I think about money has a huge impact on my reality. Over the past year, I’ve worked hard to shift my mindset from one of scarcity and fear to one of abundance. In 2025, I’m committing to believing that I am worthy of financial success, especially when it comes to my blog, Beauty In Color. I’m letting go of self-deprecating thoughts about what I can or can’t do, and instead, respecting my financial worth and capabilities. Change starts with the way we think—and I’m all in for that transformation.
6. The Idea That There’s No Time for Yourself
With everything on my plate—career, family, friends, and personal goals—it’s easy to convince myself that I don’t have time to rest and recharge. But here’s the truth I’m embracing this year: if I don’t make time for myself, I’m doing a disservice to everyone else. Whether it’s quiet time alone, a social outing with loved ones, or a full day of self-care, I’m learning to prioritize my well-being. After all, a healthier, happier Dana is more productive, engaged, and fulfilled.
7. Resentments
Holding on to resentment is like carrying a weight that only hurts me. This year, I’m working to let go of grudges, whether by having tough conversations or simply releasing the anger I’ve been holding onto. I want to free myself from the past so that I can move forward with peace and clarity. Creating space for healing is part of creating the life I deserve in 2025.
8. A Too-Strict Regimen
As much as I love setting ambitious goals, I’ve realized that being too rigid with myself only leads to burnout. In 2025, I’m adopting a more balanced approach. I’m still setting goals, but I’m breaking them down into small, manageable steps. It’s about building sustainable habits, not striving for perfection. This more flexible approach will also help me stay consistent with Beauty In Color, making it a more fulfilling and sustainable project.
9. The Fear of Letting Go
Change can be scary. Sometimes, it feels like grieving when we let go of old habits, beliefs, or relationships. But here’s the key takeaway: letting go is an act of self-love. I’m reminding myself that I’m in control of my narrative and that I have the power to choose what’s best for me. Letting go creates space for new experiences, growth, and all the wonderful things 2025 has in store.
Letting go doesn’t mean you’re losing something—it’s about making room for all the good that’s waiting for you. So here’s to 2025: a year of freedom, growth, and welcoming everything we deserve! Let’s release what no longer serves us and make room for the life we truly want.
