Here’s a county-by-county look at the plans and effects of wintry weather this week throughout Coastal Georgia. Send any updates or questions to staff@thecurrentga.org. Information for this comes from state, city, county and EMS officials. Other information is verified by a second source.

ALL COASTAL COUNTIES

All YMCA of Coastal Georgia branches will close at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21, with morning fitness classes and Childwatch only. Decisions about Wednesday hours, childcare, YBASE, and more will be shared as the situation develops. For the latest updates, click here: https://ow.ly/GH2c50UJQzr

BRYAN

SCHOOLS: Bryan County Schools will dismiss one hour early on Tuesday, Jan. 21 and all sporting events, afterschool activities, and community education classes have been cancelled. School officials will decide by 2 p.m. Tuesday whether to close schools on Wednesday, Jan. 22.

The Day School at Church of the Hill will be open as usual on Tuesday, Jan. 21.

CLOSINGS:

WARMING CENTERS: Setups will be minimalistic, with no cots, showers, or other amenities. South Bryan County Warming StationTimber Trail Gymnasium, 508 Timber Trail, Richmond Hill; North Bryan County Warming StationPembroke Christian Church Social Hall, 116 West Bacon St., Pembroke.

Residents are strongly urged to shelter in place and avoid traveling unless absolutely necessary. Hazardous road conditions, particularly on bridges, are expected as freezing rain and snow begin to accumulate. Bryan County Public Works crews are actively sanding bridges and preparing roads ahead of the storm to enhance safety.

CAMDEN

Camden County is under a winter storm warning beginning at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2025, and lasting through 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025.

SCHOOLS: Camden County Schools will be open on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2025. Schools will be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025. All afterschool activities for Tuesday and Wednesday will be canceled.

CLOSINGS: On Wednesday, Jan 2, 2025, the county government and city offices will be closed to the public and will operate with essential personnel only.

WARMING CENTERS: The Camden County Recreation Center is open overnight from 8 tonight to 9 a.m. Tuesday and continuing as needed based on weather conditions. The location is 1050 Wildcat Drive, Kingsland. Call 912-729-5602 if you have any additional questions.

CHATHAM

SCHOOLS: Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools will shift to Remote-Learning Days for students on Tuesday, Jan. 21, Wednesday, Jan. 22, and Thursday, Jan. 23. This weather event could result in hazardous driving conditions for area roadways and dangerous temperatures including sub-freezing wind chills on Tuesday, Wednesday, and into Thursday morning.  After the weather system moves away, all facilities and district systems will be inspected on Thursday afternoon to ensure functionality for a return to in-person school on Friday, Jan. 24.

CLOSINGS: All Chatham County offices will close at noon on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, and remain closed on Wednesday, January 22, 2025. A decision for reopening Thursday, January 23, will be made later after assessing conditions. 

The Coleman Courthouse and Juvenile Court will close at noon Tuesday and remain closed through Wednesday. Anyone who has business with the Courts should CALL ON THURSDAY to reschedule appointments or dockets.

Savannah city administrative offices and facilities will close at noon on Tuesday. Offices will remain closed all day Wednesday, Jan. 22. Thursday operations will be determined later depending on the impacts of the storm. Emergency services will remain open. The Incident Management Team for the city has been activated. The Emergency Operations Center will be opened for 24-hour operations beginning on Tuesday.

Savannah sanitation routes will be affected by the closures. Residential garbage collection, recycling collection, and yard waste collection services were already operating on a one-day delayed holiday schedule. Monday’s routes will be collected Tuesday morning. Collection route operations for Wednesday through Friday are to be determined. Updates will be provided to the public as available.

Live Oak Public Libraries will close all libraries on Tuesday, Jan. 21 and Wednesday, Jan. 22. Thursday operations are yet to be determined.

Hunter Army Airfield: See Fort Stewart entry under Liberty County.

Savannah Technical College will transition to virtual learning for students and remote work for employees on Tuesday, Jan. 21 and Wednesday, Jan. 22 due to the anticipated severe winter weather conditions in the region. The college will closely monitor the weather situation and determine if it is necessary to adjust the schedule for Thursday, Jan. 23. This decision will be communicated through available channels, including the Savannah Tech website, email, and social media on Wednesday. WARMING CENTERS: The Tompkins Regional Center, 2333 Ogeechee Road, will open 7 p.m. Monday, closing at 7 a.m. the following morning for residents in need of a last resort overnight shelter. Beginning Tuesday, the warming center at Tompkins will be open from 3 p.m. until 11 a.m. on Thursday. Pets, under the owner’s control, are welcome. Bare essentials will be provided for people, all needed supplies for pets should be brought. Capacity at the warming center will be limited. 

Residents are encouraged to minimize travel, stay indoors, check on the elderly and bring pets inside during the worst part of the extreme cold. For winter weather safety tips and updates, visit //savannahga.gov/winterweather. Media will not be allowed in the warming centers.  

The Savannah Police Department and Chatham Savannah Authority for the Homeless (CSAH) can assist in transporting residents to shelter locations if required.

Homeless Service Provider Partners are also extending hours and services to serve persons experiencing homelessness. Transportation is available through CSAH outreach staff from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday. Please call the numbers above for assistance and transportation support.   

  • Union Mission (Men Only) – through Thursday, 120 Fahm St.  Meals and up to 11 bed spaces provided.
  • Old Savannah City Mission (Men Only): through Thursday, 2414 Bull St.  Meals and overnight warming center available  
  • Come As You Are: Tuesday- Thursday (Jan. 21-23), 4429 Skidaway Road. Meals and Cots provided (up to 25 people)  
  • Union Mission Grace House Day Center: Open Tuesday, Jan. 21. Operations may vary due to weather conditions on Wednesday, Thursday. 

GLYNN

Conditions have led to potential ice accumulation and impacts to power lines, trees and roadways. Residents are advised to be aware of potential for black ice. The morning wind chills in are forecasted to be in the low to mid 20s. The cold weather advisory is still in place, Wednesday morning. Hard freezes are possible from Wednesday night through Saturday night.

The Roosevelt Harris, Jr. Senior Center is available, but no transportation will be available. Transportation through the Coastal Regional Commission will not be available through Tuesday and Wednesday.

SCHOOLS: Glynn County Schools will remain open on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2025. All extracurricular activities and after-school programs will conclude by 4 p.m. All schools will be closed Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025.

CLOSINGS:

Recreation & Parks have cancelled activities scheduled for after 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2025.

Glynn County libraries will close at 4 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2025, and will remain closed Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025.

WARMING CENTERS: There has been no announcement of warming centers for Glynn County.

LIBERTY

Follow the Liberty County Emergency Management Agency at https://www.facebook.com/libertycountyema for weather-related updates.

SCHOOLS: On Tuesday, Jan. 21, Liberty County Schools will be open for a required half-day instruction on remote learning, followed by these release times:

  • Pre-K: 11 a.m.
  • Elementary: 11:30 a.m.
  • High School: 12:45 p.m.
  • Middle School: 1:15 p.m.

On Wednesday, Jan. 22 and Thursday, Jan. 23, students will take part in virtual learning. Students should have their iPads or Chromebooks.

LCSS will announce whether students and staff should return to school on Friday, Jan. 24, and will convey information through local news and social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

CLOSINGS:

Liberty County offices are closed Tuesday, Jan. 21 and Wednesday, Jan. 22; county officials will decide later whether or not to reopen Thursday, Jan. 23. The Transfer Station will be open as usual Tuesday, Jan. 21 but closed Wednesday, Jan. 22.

All Liberty County Recreation basketball games for Tuesday, Jan. 21 and Wednesday, Jan. 22 are cancelled.

Live Oak Public Libraries are closed Tuesday, Jan. 21 and Wedenesday, Jan. 22 due to tghe winter weather. The library will share reopening information by Wednesday afternoon. Due dates and holds will be extended and late fees will be waived. Visit liveoakpl.org for updates.

The City of Hinesville’s administrative offices and facilities are closed Tuesday, Jan. 21 and Wednesday, Jan. 22.

Hinesville Municipal Court‘s Wednesday, Jan. 22 session will be rescheduled.

Flemington City Hall will be closed on Tuesday, Jan, 21 and Wednesday, Jan, 22. The closure may be extended to Thursday, Jan, 23. The special called meeting on the Downtown District Overlay Plan scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 22 will be rescheduled to either Friday, Jan, 24 or Monday, Jan. 27 at 2 p.m., pending scheduling feedback from City Council members.

Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield: On Tuesday, Jan. 21, Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield soldiers and civilian workforce will be released no later than 4 p.m. All AAFES facilities and the commissaries will also close at 4 p.m. Leaders are empowered to release soldiers as mission dictates based on individual situations as necessary.
On Wednesday, Jan. 22, Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield will be closed. On Thursday, Jan. 23, Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield anticipates a delayed open at 1 p.m. for soldiers and civilian workforce. Contact your first line supervisor or chain of command for reporting instructions. AAFES facilities and the commissaries are planning to reopen at noon Thursday.

WARMING CENTERS: None yet announced. The City of Hinesville contracts with a local hotel for unhoused people seeking to get out of dangerous weather. However, “emergency shelter is not automatic or guaranteed. Service is based on coordinated entry assessment prioritization,” according to the city’s website. If you are homeless and are willing to go to a motel room to survive the freeze, go to the Hinesville Police Department at 123 East Martin Luther King Jr. Drive (next to City Hall) or call (912) 368-8211.

LONG

SCHOOLS: Long County Schools will be closed Tuesday, Jan. 21, and Wednesday, Jan. 22. All athletic activities and practices are cancelled/ District administrators and Emergency Management Authority officials will monitor weather conditions. School officials will continue to work closely with local EMA officials to monitor our weather conditions, and will announce Wednesday whether schools will remain closed through Thursday, Jan. 23.

CLOSINGS:

WARMING CENTERS: A warming center will open at the Long County Jail, 465 South McDonald Street, Ludowici, on Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 1 p.m. through Wednesday, Jan. 22. “to provide a safe, warm space during the extreme cold.” County officials will decide whetgher to extend the warming center through Thursday, Jan. 23 depending on weather conditions.

This shelter is made possible by Long County Fire Department Volunteers, Rotary Club of Long County, the Homeless Coalition, Manna House of Long County, and the Long County Sheriff’s Office.

SCHOOLS: McIntosh County Schools will move to remote learning and remote work days for Tuesday, Jan. 21 and Wednesday, Jan. 22. All after-school activities, practices, and events are cancelled for both Tuesday and Wednesday, including the YMCA and the Boys & Girls Club.

Teachers and/or school officials will post assignments by noon on Tuesday. On Wednesday, officials will announce plans for Thursday, Jan. 23.
