Flau’jae Johnson had a productive night for the Seattle Storm despite their loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on Sunday. However, it wasn’t without issues.
The Storm rookie finished with a team-high 19 points on 7-of-18 shooting, along with three rebounds, two assists and one steal. Unfortunately, her efforts were not enough to lead Seattle to victory, with the team losing 90-74.
Making matters worse for Johnson, she was assessed a technical foul during the game, bringing her technical foul tally to three.
With 53 seconds remaining in the second quarter, Johnson attacked the basket after recovering the ball following Dominique Malonga’s block on Cameron Brink. However, the 22-year-old guard was called for an offensive foul on the Sparks’ Tonie Morgan.
Naturally, Johnson was not happy with the call and argued with the referee, prompting the game official to call a technical foul.
With the call, Johnson is now due to pay a $500 fine to the WNBA because of the increased penalties under the new collective bargaining agreement.
Previously, the first three technical fouls of a player were only punishable by a $200 fine. Now, it’s $500 for each of the first three techs, $1,000 for the fourth through seventh and $1,500 for the eighth tech and beyond. A one-game suspension also awaits those who reach the eighth technical foul and every even-numbered tech after that.
Johnson will certainly need to be careful since she will have to pay a higher fine with her next technical foul. Players who reach five techs also get a warning letter from the WNBA.
