Stay Informed: Latest News from Across Georgia

    Key takeaways
    • Soil test: Take a sample to the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension for pH and nutrient readings; amend with lime or sulfur.
    • Amend beds with shredded leaves, rich compost, or well-rotted manure to boost soil structure and drainage over winter.
    • Plant trees, shrubs, and hardy perennials plus spring bulbs like daffodils and tulips so roots establish for vibrant spring blooms.

Savvy gardeners know that a beautiful spring garden begins the previous fall! Autumn in Georgia brings milder temperatures, fewer pests, and (hopefully) refreshing rainfall, creating the perfect environment to plant new trees, bulbs and shrubs, amend your soil and establish strong root systems in your plants. By tackling these ten essential tasks in the weeks ahead, you can set the stage for a vibrant, healthy, and low-maintenance spring garden.

    1. Conduct a Soil Test – Great gardens start from the ground up. Fall is the ideal time take a soil sample to your local University of Georgia Cooperative Extension office. Testing now gives you an accurate reading of your soil pH and nutrient levels, allowing plenty of time to add needed amendments (like lime or sulfur) to enrich garden beds and lawns before the spring.
    1. Clear Out Summer Debris – Don’t let old, spent, summer vegetables or fading annuals linger in your beds. Debris left behind can invite pests and diseases to overwinter in your soil, creating immediate problems next year. Pull up dead plants and discard any diseased material entirely rather than tossing it into your compost pile.
    1. Amend Your Soil with Organic Matter – Once your beds are cleared, it is time to feed the soil. Layer a few inches of shredded fall leaves, rich compost or well-rotted manure into your garden beds. Earthworms and microbial life will work through the winter months to incorporate these nutrients, improving soil structure and drainage ahead of spring.
    1. Divide Crowded Perennials – If your hostas, daylilies, or irises looked overcrowded, fall is the time to divide them. Dig up the root clumps, split them gently, and replant them elsewhere, or share them with neighbors. This stimulates fresh growth and guarantees more prolific blooms come spring.
    1. Plant Trees, Shrubs, and Hardies – In Georgia, fall is the absolute best time to plant new trees, shrubs, and hardy perennials. The soil is still warm enough to encourage robust root growth, while the cooler air minimizes heat stress on the plants. By spring, their established roots will help them better survive the intense summer heat.
    1. Add Color with Spring-Flowering Bulbs – For a spectacular splash of early spring color, plant bulbs like daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, alliums, and crocuses late in the autumn—usually from late October through December. Plant them in well-draining soil with the pointed end facing upward, buried to a depth of about three times the bulb’s height. (Check the exact depth for your specific bulb).
    1. Add Cool-Season Annuals – Don’t let your garden stay bare and gloomy during the winter. Planting cool-season annuals like pansies, violas, and snapdragons between mid-October and November gives them time to develop sturdy roots. They will survive the frost and provide cheerful color all the way into early spring.
    1. Refresh the Mulch – Mulch is your best friend in the garden. Not only does it give your garden beds a finished look, but is crucial for regulating soil temperatures, conserving moisture during dry spells, and preventing aggressive winter weeds from taking root. Apply a fresh two-inch layer of organic mulch, such as shredded leaves, hardwood mulch, or pine straw, across your garden beds.
    1. Plant Cool-Season Crops – Utilize your empty vegetable beds by planting garlic or cool-season greens like kale, collards, mustard greens, Swiss chard and spinach. Garlic requires a winter chilling period to form cloves, while winter greens will actually grow sweeter and more flavorful after enduring a light Georgia frost.
    1. Clean and Store Garden Tools – Wrap up the season by properly maintaining your equipment. Wipe dirt off your shovels and pruners, sharpen the blades, and apply a light coat of oil to prevent rust. Empty, clean, and store your hoses and terracotta pots indoors to prevent them from cracking when temperatures drop.

Investing a little time in your autumn garden ensures less work and spectacular rewards when the sweet Georgia spring rolls around.
