Glow & Grow: Black Beauty, Haircare, and Skincare Tips

    Key takeaways
    • Trader Joe's Nourish Oil-Free Antioxidant Facial Moisturizer (Night Cream): rich, nourishing, non-greasy; my favorite so far.
    • Nourish Antioxidant Facial Moisturizer felt underwhelming and lacks SPF; I prefer Murad and Dermalogica with built-in sun protection.
    • Trader Joe's Vanilla Lip Mask is a budget-friendly dupe for Laneige, slightly grainy at first but effective; I'd buy it again.

If you’ve spent any time on social media lately, you’ve probably seen someone raving about Trader Joe’s beauty products. From skincare dupes to affordable moisturizers and lip masks, their beauty aisle has developed quite the following and I my FYP is full of Trader Joe’s beauty products over the actual food!

Why Black Women Need Sunscreen: The Truth About Melanin & Sun Protection

Naturally, I had to see what the hype was all about.  I walked into Trader Joe’s with a shopping list, hoping to pick up several of their most talked-about skincare products. Unfortunately, I didn’t find everything on my list, but I did leave with a couple of products to test—and I already have some first impressions.

Exterior of a Trader Joe's grocery store on a sunny day.

My Trader Joe’s Beauty Shopping List

Here’s what I was hoping to find during my visit.

    I Found

    • Nourish Antioxidant Facial Moisturizer
    • Nourish Oil-Free Antioxidant Facial Moisturizer (Night Cream)

    I Couldn’t Find

    • Nourish All-in-One Facial Cleanser
    • Daily Facial Sunscreen SPF 40 (Shimmer Finish)
    • Watermelon Overnight Face Mask

One funny thing—I originally thought the Watermelon Overnight Face Mask was just a lip mask. After doing a little more digging, I realized it’s actually an overnight face mask. So while I didn’t pick it up this trip, it’s definitely staying on my list for next time if I feel I need one.

    My First Impressions

I’ve only used these products for a short time, so these are truly first impressions—not a full review.

    Nourish Antioxidant Facial Moisturizer

This one didn’t quite win me over.It isn’t a bad moisturizer, but compared to what I’m used to, it felt a little underwhelming. My skin didn’t feel quite as hydrated as it does when I use my favorite daytime moisturizers.

One thing I noticed right away is that it doesn’t contain SPF.I’ve gotten very used to using daytime moisturizers with built-in sun protection, especially products from Murad and Dermalogica. Even though I always apply sunscreen separately, I like knowing there’s an extra layer of SPF in my moisturizer in case I’m rushing out the door.

How To Go From Relaxed Hair To Natural Hair Successfully

Lately, I’ve been loving the Black Girl Sunscreen SPF 50 Sunscreen Stick for reapplying sunscreen throughout the day. It’s easy to toss in my bag and makes touching up my sunscreen simple without getting it on my hands.  So,  while I don’t rely on moisturizer alone for sun protection, I do miss having SPF built into my daytime skincare.  For me, this moisturizer was just…okay.  That doesn’t mean it won’t work for someone else, but based on my first impression, I probably wouldn’t reach for it over my usual favorites.

I’ve gotten very used to using daytime moisturizers from Murad and Dermalogica because both include SPF and leave my skin feeling hydrated throughout the day.

Nourish Oil-Free Antioxidant Facial Moisturizer (Night Cream)

Now this one surprised me.  Unlike the daytime moisturizer, the night cream is rich, creamy, and feels much more nourishing on my skin.  After just one use, my skin felt soft without feeling greasy or heavy.  Of course, I’ll continue testing it over the next few weeks, but my first impression is very positive. I can already tell this is the product I’m most excited to keep using.

A Quick Word About Trader Joe’s Vanilla Lip Mask

Although I didn’t buy this on this shopping trip, I already own Trader Joe’s Vanilla Lip Mask, so I wanted to mention it.  I’ve seen people compare it to the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask, and honestly, I understand why.  Performance-wise, I think they’re very similar and the biggest difference I’ve noticed is the texture.  The Trader Joe’s version has a slight graininess when you first apply it, but it’s not uncomfortable, and I stop noticing it pretty quickly. It’s just something I don’t experience with Laneige and wanted to make sure I stated my notice.

Would I buy it again? Absolutely.  Especially considering the price along with how it does work very well and these lips are never peeling or chapped!

The Trader Joe’s Vanilla Lip Mask reminds me a lot of the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask, although the Trader Joe’s version has a slightly grainier texture.

Graphic featuring three Trader Joe's beauty products I hope to find on my next shopping trip: the Watermelon Overnight Face Mask, Nourish All-in-One Facial Cleanser, and Shimmer Oil Sunscreen SPF 30.

    What I’m Still Looking For

Even though I didn’t find everything on my list, I’m planning another Trader Joe’s trip soon.

    I’m especially interested in finding:

    • Nourish All-in-One Facial Cleanser
    • Trader Joe’s Shimmer Oil Sunscreen
    • Watermelon Overnight Face Mask

If they’re sold out this often, maybe they’re worth the hype!

Lately I’ve been reaching for the Black Girl Sunscreen SPF 50 Stick for easy reapplication throughout the day.

    Final Thoughts

My first Trader Joe’s beauty shopping trip wasn’t exactly the haul I expected, but I’m still glad I went.  The daytime moisturizer didn’t impress me, but the night cream definitely did and sometimes that’s just how skincare works—you don’t always love every product in a collection.  I’ll keep using both products over the next few weeks and share a more in-depth update once I’ve had enough time to really put them to the test.

In the meantime, I’d love to hear from you.  Have you tried Trader Joe’s beauty products? Which ones are worth picking up on my next trip? Let me know in the comments!
