Black Travelers: Explore Culture, Adventure & Connection

    Key takeaways
    • Never post your travel itinerary; sharing plans can let strangers track your location and compromise safety.
    • Avoid showing expensive valuables like jewelry, cameras, or laptops; images plus location attract thieves.
    • Skip photos of your hotel room or rooftop views; scenery clues can reveal your exact location.
    • Do not share unique hotel features or hotel wristbands; identifiable details expose where you are in real time.

While travelers may know not to tag their real-time location, other identifying and personal information innocently shared online may accidentally leave them vulnerable.

As safety is every traveler’s priority, it’s crucial to be mindful of the identifying information you share online while on the go and away from home. Though flexing your latest trip on the ‘gram may be exciting, mindlessly posting things like your boarding pass, luggage tags, and even your destination (depending on how small it is) can put you at risk or create difficulties during your trip. Being aware and practicing caution are critical, as the hidden security risks of sharing sensitive information online are very real, even if your socials are private.

Generally, waiting until after you’ve left a location is the safest time to post that you were there. Here are five seemingly innocent things that you should think twice about posting online before or during your travels.

5 Things That Can Compromise Your Safety While Traveling

    Your Itinerary

Posting your itinerary online before or during your trip is a safety no-no. Doing so is a bad idea, as it’ll make it easy for anyone to track and locate you if they choose. Especially if you’re posting the itinerary you’ll follow on a public social media account, even strangers might know your whereabouts, which could compromise your safety and that of others in your travel group.

    Your Valuables

Posting things online, like your cash, expensive jewelry, camera, laptop, and even your phone, can make you a target if a bad actor also gains access to your location. Refraining from sharing valuables online and practicing common-sense safety measures, regardless of your location – such as always placing them in a safe – can help keep you and your high-value items protected.

Views From Your Hotel Room Window Or A Rooftop

With modern technology, people online may be able to determine your exact location simply by knowing your view. With that in mind, posting the outlook from your hotel room, or even from a rooftop, can give others clues about where you’re staying, the attraction you’re currently at, or where you’re enjoying a meal.

    Unique Hotel Features

Relatedly, before and during your travels, practice discernment when posting any identifying features of your accommodations that are unique or exclusive. Distinctive lobbies, common areas, pools, and floor hallways, for example, may be easily recognizable – leading others to know your location.

    Your Hotel Wristband

It may be easy for one to mindlessly share a snapshot of their hotel wristband online. However, someone may be able to figure out where you’re staying in real time by seeing the hotel’s name on the bracelet, its shape, or even its color, depending on how it compares to other hotels in your area. That said, it’s best to avoid sharing clips or photos of any hotel wristband you may be given.
