Glow & Grow: Black Beauty, Haircare, and Skincare Tips

    Key takeaways
    • Consumer-led, solutions-first approach: Bask & Lather prioritizes transparency, authenticity, and results for textured hair concerns like thinning edges and scalp irritation.
    • Shaina Rainford champions scalp first strategy with science backed formulations, personalized routines, and education for long term textured hair wellness.
    • Community-driven growth fuels global expansion; customers shape products, aiding Bask & Lather's entry into the UK, Europe, and beyond.

Shaina Rainford built Bask & Lather into one of the fastest-growing textured hair brands in the US, without a single outside investor. Here’s how…

Bask & Lather founder, Shaina Rainford

Bask & Lather is one of the fastest-growing textured hair care brands in the United States, and founder Shaina Rainford built it entirely without outside investment. In an industry where rapid growth is usually associated with venture capital and celebrity backing, she has taken a different path, proving that community and innovation can be just as powerful.

From bestselling products on TikTok Shop and Amazon to a growing international customer base, Bask & Lather’s success reflects a wider shift in beauty. Today’s consumers are looking for brands that understand their needs and deliver results.

For Rainford, every decision starts with the people the brand was created to serve.

Building Bask & Lather on Her Own Terms

Many entrepreneurs pursue outside funding to accelerate growth, but Rainford intentionally chose to retain full ownership of Bask & Lather. For her, preserving equity was about protecting the company’s vision.

“From the beginning, I wanted to build a business that stayed true to the people it was created for,” she explains. “Preserving equity meant preserving the ability to make decisions based on what was best for our customers, our team and our long-term vision.”

Remaining self-funded has enabled Bask & Lather to invest in innovation where it sees genuine customer need while continuing to grow on its own terms. That independence has been instrumental in shaping the brand’s identity and long-term strategy.

Why the Bask & Lather Consumer-led Approach Works

The rise of social commerce has transformed the beauty industry, and Rainford believes consumers have become increasingly discerning. “They’re looking for transparency, authenticity and products that actually deliver results,” she says. “They want to see real people, real hair journeys and real outcomes.”

Rather than focusing solely on marketing, Bask & Lather has built its reputation by addressing common concerns affecting textured hair, including thinning edges, postpartum shedding, scalp irritation and length retention. That practical, solutions-led approach has helped the brand stand out in a crowded marketplace.

The Future Starts at the Scalp

For years, much of the conversation around textured hair centred on styling. Rainford believes the industry is now entering a new phase, one where scalp health is becoming a priority.

“What excites me most is that the conversation is evolving beyond just hair and into overall scalp health,” she says. She expects continued growth in science-backed formulations, personalised routines and education that empowers consumers to understand their hair better.

Rather than chasing quick fixes, she believes the future of textured hair care will be rooted in long-term health and wellness.

A Global Community, One Shared Goal

Although Bask & Lather began with a focus on the US market, its appeal now stretches far beyond American borders. Rainford describes the international response as both exciting and humbling. Customers in London, Paris and New York may come from different backgrounds, but many share the same goal: healthier hair and a healthier scalp.

The Bath & Lather best-selling Strong Hold Control Gel

As the brand looks towards further expansion across the UK and Europe, Rainford believes consumers are increasingly seeking ingredient transparency, expert education and brands that genuinely understand textured hair. Those values have been central to Bask & Lather since day one and continue to drive its global growth.

    Community as a Growth Strategy

One of Bask & Lather’s defining strengths is its close relationship with customers. Product ideas, educational initiatives and marketing campaigns are often inspired by conversations taking place through reviews, customer service interactions and social media. Listening closely to its audience has helped the company create stronger products and deeper connections with the people it serves.

“Our customers don’t just support the brand,” says Rainford. “They help shape it.”

The Next Chapter for Textured Hair Care

As textured hair care continues to evolve, Bask & Lather is well positioned to help shape the conversation. Growing consumer interest in scalp wellness, education and ingredient transparency reflects many of the values that have driven the brand’s success from the start.

For Rainford, the opportunity is not simply about entering new markets. It’s about creating products and resources that resonate with consumers around the world while recognising the diversity within the textured hair community.

As demand for specialised hair care continues to rise across the UK, Europe and beyond, Bask & Lather’s growth highlights the increasing appeal of brands that combine innovation, results and a genuine understanding of textured hair consumers.

To celebrate Bask & Lather’s entry into the UK, Black Beauty & Hair are offering readers a chance to win a full set of Bask & Lather’s Scalp Therapy System worth £73.
