Politics Today: News, Analysis & Debate Across the Spectrum

CNN senior political commentator Scott Jennings ripped Rep. Jasmine Crockett on Sunday after the Texas Democrat attacked Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk earlier on the network.

Crockett appeared on Sunday’s “State of the Union” and went after the slain conservative leader after host Dana Bash pressed her about voting against a resolution condemning his murder. She bemoaned that “only two caucasians” joined her in opposition and labeled Kirk a “Confederate” with “harmful” rhetoric.  (RELATED: ‘I Forgive Him’: Kirk’s Widow Erika Says Answering Hate With Love Is ‘What Charlie Would Do’)

Kirk was killed in Utah on Sept. 10 by an alleged assassin who likewise claimed Kirk was doing harmful things. When Bash confronted Crockett about her past heated rhetoric, Crockett doubled down, bashing both Kirk and President Donald Trump and making another Hitler comparison. When Bash asked Jennings for his response, he unleashed on her, starting with three simple words: “Well, she’s lying.”

“I mean, Charlie Kirk targeted nobody. He was not racist in any way. I’ve listened to hours and hours and hours and hours of Charlie Kirk debates and talks and have been with Charlie Kirk and did events with Charlie Kirk and knew Charlie Kirk. There wasn’t a racist bone in his body,” Jennings said. “To say that he was continuously targeting people of color is nothing but a malicious smear on the very day that people are remembering Charlie, and he’s going to be laid to rest.”

“And so, I think when you combine the no votes on the resolution and then you look at the leading democratic voices like Ilhan Omar and Jasmine Crockett, who’ve gone out to smear Charlie before he’s even had his funeral,” Jennings continued. “When I hear people say, we need to come together and both sides need to turn down the rhetoric, you know, a lot of the people saying that need to look inward right now. I was shocked at that. Well, I guess I should say I’m shocked by her, but I was a little, little stunned by what happened this morning.”

Four Republicans joined Democrats to defeat a resolution to censure Omar for comments she made during a Sept. 11 appearance on Zeteo News, where she told Mehdi Hasan that those defending Kirk’s campus appearances were “full of shit.”

Crockett has a history of making inflammatory statements, recently comparing United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to “slave patrols,” defending comparisons of Trump to Hitler on a Sept. 12 appearance on “The Breakfast Club,” claimed Trump’s supporters were mentally ill and mocked Republican Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas, who uses a wheelchair.
