    Key takeaways
    • The Flight Dynamics Research Facility at Langley replaces two aging tunnels, built in partnership with the U.S. General Services Administration.
    • The 25,000-square-foot facility features a 20-foot-diameter, 24-foot-high vertical test section and controlled winds up to 117 mph.
    • Four 4,750-horsepower electric motors drive 14-foot, eight-bladed carbon-fiber fans to rapidly vary airflow and replicate higher-altitude conditions.
    • Engineers will test parachutes, reentry vehicles, aircraft, drones and tech for missions to Venus, Titan, the Moon and Mars.

HAMPTON, Va.– NASA opened its very first major brand-new wind tunnel in more than 40 years Friday, noting a landmark for future aeronautics and space-exploration research study.

The Trip Dynamics Research Facility, located at the company’s Langley Proving ground in Hampton, Virginia, will certainly act as a testing room for future airplane and space objectives.

“The opening of the Trip Characteristics Research study Facility represents a substantial advancement for NASA and for the nation,” claimed Dr. Trina Dyal, NASA Langley center supervisor. “By bringing modernized screening capacities under one roof covering, we are making it possible for transformative research study that will make certain the USA continues to be at the center of aeronautics and exploration.”

“The abilities in terms of wind rate that this can give are a lot greater,” claimed Giovanny Guecha, technical lead for the NASA Dragonfly parachute decelerator system. “It’s almost an aspect of ten compared to the previous method it’s been done. So that assists us, you understand, check more stressful problems that are better to Venus.”
