Nov. 4,  2026 Capitol Beat News

Ty Tagami reports, Georgia voters made history Tuesday, electing for the first time in 238 years of statehood a woman — and a Black person — as governor. In January, when she is sworn into office, Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms, the former mayor of Atlanta, will also become the first Black woman governor of any state in the 250-year history of the nation.

    Nov. 4,  2026 Georgia Trend – Exclusive!

Brian A. Lee reports that Georgia’s ports are making big waves even hundreds of miles from the water’s edge – and that is the latest secret to its success as one of the nation’s leading trade hubs. A new inland port in Hall County will handle 200,000 container shipments per year and support nearly 15,000 local jobs, while eliminating 18 million truck miles from Georgia’s highways.

    Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Rosie Manins reports that Walmart is the first company to successfully appeal a jury verdict under a new Georgia law aimed at limiting lawsuits and easing insurance rates, beating an almost $1 million judgment in a slip-and-fall case. The Georgia Court of Appeals granted the retail giant a new trial in a personal injury suit filed in 2022 by Lowndes County resident Ruby Medders, who slipped on spilled liquid in the dog-food aisle of a Walmart store in Valdosta in November 2020.

Trevor Williams reports, following up on a delegation led by Argentina’s tech-founder ambassador last year, the country’s consulate general in Atlanta is once again welcoming a group of 19 software and technology firms seeking customers in the city. The visit is the latest iteration of what has become an (at least) annual tradition as Argentina’s foreign ministry continues to shine a light on the Southeast as a key entry point into the U.S. market.

    Gainesville Times

Adriana Cascio reports that for students who would rather trade a traditional classroom for a jam session, a new Gainesville high school is looking to put music at the center of their education. Let There Be Rock Schools is partnering with Northern Pre-University, an education organization based in Ontario, Canada, to create Let There Be Rock Academy, a private high school for aspiring musicians.

    Macon Telegraph

Laura Corley reports that the Macon-Bibb County Commission wants to ask voters to decide whether to renew an additional penny sales tax that Mayor Lester Miller credits with helping reduce property tax rates over the past five years. The OLOST — which stands for Other Local Option Sales Tax — is a penny-on-the-dollar sales tax first approved by Bibb County voters in 2021.

Republican nominee, state Rep. Tim Fleming of Covington, loses with 44.4%, according to the AP.

    Nov. 4,  2026
    Augusta Chronicle

Joe Hotchkiss reports that a potential blue wave lapping at the feet of Georgia voters Tuesday became a tsunami that swept Democratic candidates into the state’s highest offices. The state’s entire executive slate shifted to the Democrats, who won the races for lieutenant governor, secretary of state, attorney general, agriculture commissioner, insurance commissioner, state school superintendent and labor commissioner.

    State Affairs

Beau Evans reports, for Robbin Vincent, voting in Georgia’s midterm elections meant more than just picking the next politicians to run the state government. It was about more than stopping data centers, fixing the public school system or making groceries more affordable. It was about honoring her ancestors.

    Nov. 4,  2026
    Georgia Recorder

Maya Homan and Jill Nolin report, Tuesday night was a clean sweep for Georgia Democrats, with voters electing Democrats to every statewide office that was on the ballot. Voters reelected U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff by a wide margin and elected former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms to be not just the first Democratic governor in Georgia in more than two decades but also the first elected Black woman governor to ever serve in the country.
