The Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) at Savannah State University (SSU) successfully hosted the fourth annual Tiger’s Den Pitch Competition on March 27. The event brought together student entrepreneurs from four universities to compete for up to $7,500 in seed funding. For the first time in the competition’s history, students from Fayetteville State University, Clayton State University, and Jackson State University joined SSU students in this prestigious event, marking a significant milestone in fostering cross-institutional innovation.

Held at the King-Frazier Elmore Theatre on the SSU campus, the competition featured six teams presenting their business ideas before a panel of esteemed judges, including celebrity judge and entertainer Pretty Vee, and accomplished entrepreneurs such as Cyrus Jackson, Cleo Kirkland, Donna Williams, Dr. Gwen Martin, and Romondo Stewart. The keynote speaker for the event was comedian, actor, and entertainer Finesse Mitchell, best known for his time on Saturday Night Live and numerous TV appearances.

With over 200 students in attendance, the event underscored the growing enthusiasm for entrepreneurship among young innovators.

“Tiger’s Den continues to be a platform that transforms student ideas into viable businesses,” said Dr. Shalonda K. Mullgrav, associate professor of marketing and executive director of the CIE. “This year’s competition was particularly special as we expanded beyond SSU, welcoming brilliant young entrepreneurs from across multiple universities. The energy, creativity, and determination displayed by our participants were truly inspiring. We look forward to growing this event in the years to come and providing even more opportunities for students to showcase their talents and drive meaningful change.”

The winners of the 2025 Tiger’s Den Pitch Competition are:

• 1st Place ($7,500): Fayetteville State University – The Juice Products
• 2nd Place ($5,000): Clayton State University – Media NutriHarvest
• 3rd Place ($2,500): Savannah State University – Empower Migrate
• Special Award ($1,000) by the Savannah Black Chamber of Commerce: Savannah State University – Allowance to Abundance

Dr. Carmella Lennon-Hill, assistant professor of management and assistant director of the CIE, emphasized the vision for future competitions: “We are excited about the potential for further growth and collaboration. Our goal for 2026 is to welcome even more universities and provide an even bigger platform for student entrepreneurs to shine.”
