Politics Today: News, Analysis & Debate Across the Spectrum

    Key takeaways
    • Jamie Metzl says Kamala Harris would not have had the courage or fortitude to act against Iran.
    • Jamie Metzl served on the National Security Council and was Joe Biden's Deputy Staff Director on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
    • President Trump received Metzl's praise for bold, courageous action defending America’s core national interests.
    • RedState frames the outcome as proof Democrats’ left wing won’t praise President Trump; Republicans relieved Kamala Harris is not commander in chief.

President Trump has done what no other U.S. leader in recent history has done—put a devastating end to Iran’s nuclear capabilities. While I’m sure down the road the program will come crawling out of the shadows in some new form, it is currently a shell of itself. Only one person had the strength to make this tough decision, and that person is Donald Trump. While we expected those on the right to have the president’s back on this decision, some on the left are even having to admit what a success this strike has been from POTUS 47. Now, we’re pending a potential ceasefire between Israel and Iran. Another huge accomplishment for the administration.

On Sunday, Jamie Metzl, who served on the National Security Council for President Bill Clinton, confirmed what Republican voters already know—had VP Harris won the election, there is no way this type of action would have been taken against Iran. Which means Iran would still be moving towards a nuclear weapon. The country that chants “Death to America” would be inching closer to a nuclear bomb. Let’s be clear on this: If history is our guide, a Democrat administration would simply have cut a deal with Iran, allowing them to move their program forward behind the scenes.

When it comes to Harris’s abilities, Metzl didn’t pull any punches:

I served on the National Security Council under President Clinton. I was Joe Biden’s Deputy Staff Director of the Senate foreign Relations Committee. I voted for Kamala Harris and have been a vocal critic of many dangerous and undemocratic actions taken by President Trump.

    But…

    — Jamie Metzl (@JamieMetzl) June 22, 2025

“Although I believe electing Kamala Harris would have been better for our democracy, society, and economy, as well as for helping the most vulnerable people in the United States and around the world, I also believe VP Harris would not have had the courage or fortitude to take such an essential step as the president took last night.”

The beginning of Metzl’s statement is a self-own in the sense that Harris, of course, would have been terrible for the country and our economy. However, he is a Democrat, so he’s also trying to cover for Harris before he says what he really believes—which is a doozy. The former Deputy Staff Director of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee under Joe Biden says that Harris would not have had the “courage or fortitude” to make the decision Trump did on Iran. Wow, what an unbelievable admission coming from someone who has worked in Democratic politics for so long.

Of course, Republicans know this is true. The country and the world are so fortunate to have Trump leading this global effort on all fronts right now. To get the full picture, here is Metzl’s full statement on X:

I served on the National Security Council under President Clinton. I was Joe Biden’s Deputy Staff Director of the Senate foreign Relations Committee. I voted for Kamala Harris and have been a vocal critic of many dangerous and undemocratic actions taken by President Trump.

But I’m not a blind tribalist and am perfectly comfortable praising President Trump for bold and courageous actions in support of America’s core national interests, as he took last night.

Iran has been at war with the United States for 46 years. Its regime has murdered thousands of American citizens. Its slogan “death to America“ was not window dressing but core ideology. It was racing toward a nuclear weapon with every intention of using it to threaten America, our allies, and the Middle East region as a whole.

No actions like this come without risks, and I imagine the story will get more complicated over time, but that’s why these types of decisions are complicated.

Although I believe electing Kamala Harris would have been better for our democracy, society, and economy, as well as for helping the most vulnerable people in the United States and around the world, I also believe VP Harris would not have had the courage or fortitude to take such an essential step as the president took last night.

Metzl admits that after a strong decision like this from President Trump, he is “perfectly comfortable” praising the president. Will we see more Democrats openly showing support for President Trump’s policies or foreign policy decisions? I don’t think we should hold our breath. Trump certainly won’t receive praise from the Bernie/AOC wing of the party. However, it does seem more and more that some prominent Democrats are not beholden to left-wing ideology—proving that common sense is still available to those in search of it.

After this ordeal with Iran, we are all breathing a sigh of relief that Kamala Harris is not our commander in chief—I just didn’t realize that Democrats would feel the same.

Editor’s Note: The Democrat Party has never been less popular as voters reject its globalist agenda.
