    Key takeaways
    • Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport named best U.S. airport for the sixth consecutive year in Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards.
    • Airport praised for its intimate, town-square layout and historic Southern charm, boosting sustained high traveler satisfaction.
    • Airport serves ~4 million travelers (2024), hosts the 165th Airlift Wing, and remains a key regional transportation and military hub.

The Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport has been named the best airport in the U.S. for the sixth consecutive year by readers of Conde Nast Traveler magazine. This recognition comes as part of the magazine’s 38th Annual Reader’s Choice Awards, which saw over 750,000 participants casting their votes.

The airport has received accolades for its intimate and inviting layout, which resembles a town square. Known for its charm, the airport features benches and a large clock that enhance the historic Southern street atmosphere. This attention to detail has contributed to its sustained high rankings among travelers.

In this year’s awards, the top five airports alongside Savannah/Hilton Head International include Portland International Airport, Tampa International Airport, Indianapolis International Airport, and LaGuardia Airport. The distinction highlights the competitive nature of the aviation industry, with airports vying for passenger satisfaction.

Greg Kelly, the executive director of Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, credits the airport’s continued success to the collective efforts of all its employees. Around 4 million travelers passed through the airport in 2024, underscoring its significance as a regional transportation hub.

Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport features a single passenger terminal with 10 gates and two runways. Runway 1/19 measures 7,000 feet, while Runway 10/28 spans 9,351 feet. This second runway has a unique distinction as it contains two grave markers embedded in it, a remnant of a family cemetery that was not fully relocated during the airport’s expansion in the 1940s.

In addition to its operational role, the airport is home to the Georgia Air National Guard’s 165 Airlift Wing, which operates C-130H cargo aircraft. The strategic location and facilities provided by the airport benefit both civilian and military aviation in the area.

In related local news, Savannah is currently experiencing periods of rain with temperatures hovering around 65°F and winds from the northwest at 10 to 20 mph. Rainfall is expected to reach near half an inch with an 80% chance of precipitation. Recent heavy rain has resulted in localized flooding in Chatham County, prompting emergency responders to assist stranded motorists and advise residents to follow safety protocols, including turning around in flooded areas.

The City of Savannah is currently in Operating Condition 4, actively monitoring the flood potential and providing sandbags to residents as preparation for anticipated adverse weather conditions. The forecast indicates further rain and potential thunderstorms due to a cold front and a tropical system nearing the region, requiring continued vigilance and preparation.

This recognition for Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, alongside developing weather conditions in the area, highlights both the achievements in regional transportation and the importance of safety and preparedness for local residents.
